It is with profound sadness that we, the family of Bernice Buckles announce her recent death. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Bernice died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on the 10th day of December, 2018 at the MacGillvray Guest Home.in Sydney.
Born at Cap Le Moine on October 5th, 1931 she was the youngest child of the late Dedier and Mary (Aucoin) Delaney. After finishing school Bernice moved to Montreal in 1950 where she was employed for a time with Bell Telephone. While there, she was reacquainted with the love of her life, Freddie, and they married in 1953. While in Montreal, they began their family. They were blessed with two daughters, Sandra Morrison (Peter) and Debbie (Glen Walsh) before moving back to Cape Breton and settling in Coxheath in 1971.
Bernice is survived by her devoted husband of 65 years, Freddie, her daughters Sandra and Debbie as well as her beloved 5 grandchildren Justin (Karla), Carlin (Brittany), Neil (Sarah), Scott (Kirstie) and Julia and 3 great-grandchildren (Jay, Jude and Delaney). She is also survived by her sister Lucy Piche’ and brother Myles Delaney as well as several special nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her infant daughter Julia, at birth, brothers Sammy, Willie-Joe and sisters Margaret Mac Person, Annie-Rose Klein and Rita Desveaux.
Bernice was a fun and spirited person who was very proud of her French heritage. Cooking her traditional Acadian Fricot and the best homemade bread, gathering with friends and family to enjoy music and good food were famous attributes of hers. Everyone was always welcome at the Buckles home and Bernice always made sure you had the opportunity to enjoy a good meal and warm friendship. She had many wonderful friends.
In her younger years she enjoyed step dancing and singing along to traditional songs; music which she enjoyed right up to her final days.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of the MacGillivray Guest Home for the excellent care over the past 2 years and in particular their compassion and support during this most difficult time. Special thanks to all the nurses, LPN’s and the staff of the kitchen where Bernice enjoyed many home cooked meals with the many new friends she made in her time there.
Visitation for Mrs. Buckles will take place on Thursday, December 13th from 2-4 &7-9 pm at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, December 14th at 11 am at Our Lady of Fatima Church with Fr. Patrick O’Neill officiating.
