It is with great sadness that the family of the late Baxter Frederick Goodyear announces his passing at the Ottawa General Hospital, Ottawa ON, aged 77 years.
Baxter was born on July 24, 1941 in Ladle Cove, Newfoundland to Bob and Marjorie (West) Goodyear. He became a heavy duty mechanic and spent most of his working life at the pulp and paper mill in Grand Falls-Windsor, NL. Baxter and Barbara (Bishop) were married on September 23, 1967 and together they raised two children, Kerry and Stephen. Baxter retired in 2005 and in 2011 he and Barbara continued their retirement in Ottawa in order to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Baxter was a kind, generous, loving, and funny soul. His family and friends enjoyed his dry sense of humor and wit almost as much as Baxter enjoyed it himself, for as anyone who knew him is aware, he always laughed at his own jokes before the punch line was even delivered! Despite choosing a career in the trades, Baxter always looked fondly back to the sea. He was at his happiest when he was out cod fishing with his father in Ladle Cove or heading out from Botwood with family and friends for a weekend on his boat, the “Barbara-Lynn”. Other things that family and friends would associate with Baxter included his love of lobsters, a good game of cards, summer camping trips, tending to his vegetable garden, a “nice t-bone steak”, and, of course, a glass of rum after the 4 o’clock mill whistle sounded. Baxter had many signature lines that he loved to use over the years but the one his family will remember the most fondly is when he would say goodbye to you and add the line — “Love you a million pounds!”
Baxter leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his wife, Barbara; children Kerry, Stephen (Celeste); loving and proud grandfather to Bradley, Jack, Stephanie; sisters Enid (Bryant) Dowden, Flossie (Cluny) Gillingham; brother Robert (Claudette); special niece Joanne.
Baxter is predeceased by his parents, Robert and Marjorie Goodyear.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. In the near future, his family will return his ashes to where his heart has always remained; the great island of Newfoundland.
Baxter, your family loves you a million pounds …..
Funeral arrangements entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, 10 Bayley Street, Grand Falls-Windsor, NL.
