Audrey May Facey
1924-2018
Facey, Audrey May, aged 94, died peacefully at her
daughter’s home in Tracadie on November 5,
2018.
A daughter of the late Stewart and Irene (Harris) West,
Audrey was born in Westville and grew up in Pictou County where she
met and married her late husband, Samuel Facey. She worked at various
jobs including as inspector at the gun shop in Trenton during World
War II, as a meat cutter, and with her husband, Sam, operated a
grocery store in Linacy. They then owned and operated Sam
Facey’s General Store in Tracadie for 23 years. She was
well-known in the community for volunteering with many organizations
including The Happy Tracadonians, Martha Home Care, Tracadie Veterans
Association, Crime Prevention, VON, and foot care clinics. Audrey was
a long time member of St. Matthew’s United Church in
Bayfield and was committed to regularly contributing to the Antigonish
Food Bank as well as many other charities. Audrey’s many
talents included knitting, especially socks; baking, especially her
famous Christmas fruitcakes; and bowling, which she thoroughly enjoyed
even up to this past August. In her sixties, Audrey began painting
lessons and produced more than thirty works of art which were
exhibited on her 94th birthday in April.
Audrey’s greatest joy was the annual
Christmas-in-July celebration which she hosted at her home. She
created this event for her family so that they could celebrate
together without worrying about weather conditions in December. The
celebration grew to include close friends as well and for 35 years
this was a highlight of the year for everyone.
Audrey is survived by daughters, Sandra Tomsons Tracadie;
Margaret Facey (Gary Chambers) Pictou, Leslie (Blair) Fancey,
Tracadie; son, Roger (Lorraine) Facey, Heatherton; brothers, Robert
West, Ontario; and Ron West, Port Hilford; grandchildren: Nicole,
Mark, Craig, Rachael, Bettina, Corey, Kira, Melanie, Matthew, Erica,
and Jamie, and 10 great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Elaine
and Dot; brother, Art; her beloved husband, Sam; and son-in-law,
Gunars Tomsons.
Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation as
per her wishes, but a celebration of her life will take place at St.
Matthew’s United Church in Bayfield on Sunday, November 11th
at 2:30 pm, with Reverend Heather Manuel presiding. Burial in the
parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Antigonish
Food Bank, St. Matthew’s United Church, or the Tracadie
Veterans Association.
