Lovingly Remembered
Artur (Art) Janke beloved husband of the late Adelheid Janke, passed away at home in Calgary on Monday, May 21, 2018 at the age of 90 years.
He is survived by Fred Janke of Sylvan Lake, AB, grandchild Chris (Reagan) of Edmonton and great-grandchild Freja. Art was predeceased by his beloved wife Adelheid, his parents Max and Martha Janke and his siblings, Walter, Alfred, Günther and Helga Janke.
Born in Ewaldshof, Province Neustettin, Pomerania, he raised hell as a youngster and often found himself in trouble at school. He loved to swim and read and eventually apprenticed as a chimney sweep. He was drafted into the German army and trained in Danzig. Upon the eve of being sent to the eastern front, Art had received news that the war was already over. After the war he was tasked with rescuing his family and taking them out of Eastern Germany. They had settled briefly in Westphalia where he learned a new trade as a brick layer and met his fiancé Adelheid. He came to Canada and worked as a lumberjack until getting a chance to lay brick in the Petewawa Army Base. After this, he was able to bring his family to Canada, they settled in Calgary and he began his construction company. He worked hard and he loved to be with his family, take trips to the mountains and reading in a quiet library in Bragg Creek.
A Memorial Service will be held at Mountain View Funeral Home, (Prairie View Chapel, 1605 – 100 Street SE, Calgary) on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society or Rockyview Hospital.
