Obituary for Alan Joshua Payton
PAYTON, ALAN JOSHUA – Surrounded by family, Alan Joshua Payton who was born on February 15, 1923 in Manchester England died peacefully in Belleville, Ontario on March 25, 2018. He was the loving father of Lynda, Keith (Pauline) and Beverly (Brad) and devoted grandfather of Jennifer (Casey), Michael (Samantha), Paige, James (Emilie) and Laura. Alan served in the RAF in World War 2 and then as a Salvation Army Officer in England until 1960 when he immigrated to Canada with his family. In Canada, he worked for many years as a social worker with the Children’s Aid Society, an Attendance Counsellor with the Hastings County Board of Education, and then as a Probation Officer for the Ministry of the Attorney General. True to his respect for the value of education, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Queens University in 1977. As a lifelong Salvationist, Alan devoted his life to the welfare of others including the protection of children, the dignity of those imprisoned and the need of the poor. His was a life that exemplified the Salvation Army motto, “With heart to God and hand to man”. He will be deeply missed by his family and all those whose lives he touched.
Arrangements entrusted to the John R. Bush Funeral Home, 80 Highland Avenue, Belleville (613-968-5588). Visitation will be at 11:00 am on Thursday, March 29, 2018 at the Salvation Army Belleville Citadel, 290 Bridge Street West, Belleville followed by his funeral service at 1:00 pm. Alan, who was predeceased by his wife Louise, will be laid to rest beside his loving wife and the mother of his children, Evelyn, at Foxboro Cemetery.
