DOUCET, Abel Benoit – age 77, Pleasant Lake, Yarmouth Co., passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family on Saturday, January 13, 2018 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital following complications from a stroke. Born April 10, 1940 in Hubbard’s Point, NS, Abel was the son of the late J. Roger and Gertrude (LeBlanc) Doucet. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Rose/Rosie (Johnstone), as well as by their children, Edwina, Halifax; Blair (Karen), Hebron and Charmaine, Halifax and his only grandson Joseph, Hebron. Also surviving is a brother Ulysse, Yarmouth, as well as sisters, Myra Ruggirello, Chicopee, MA; Yvonne Doucet, Yarmouth; Jacqueline Nickerson, St. George, NB; and Bernadine (Clarence) Landers, Sandford. Abel was an exceptional husband, a super dad and an amazing grandfather – he will be greatly missed. Abel will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. Aside from his parents, he was predeceased by four brothers, Pierre and Victor (both in infancy), Joshua and Leo and a sister Celeste, also in infancy. In his younger years, construction work brought Abel to Goose Bay, Labrador and Ontario. He then returned home and worked for Comeau Seafoods for more than 25 years, spending most of his time aboard the Lady Denise. Although family was everything to Abel, he also enjoyed time spent outdoors, whether he was cutting firewood, gardening, making hay or farming, he was at his happiest when he was outdoors. His true passion, however, were his cattle, having tended up to 15 head of cattle up until a few years ago. He also enjoyed attending exhibitions and ox pulls as both a spectator and as a judge on both the south and north shores of Nova Scotia. He frequently visited the Shell Station in Pleasant Lake during the evenings where he had many friends. Most recently, he enjoyed attending kitchen parties at Greenville and Pembroke community halls. Visitation will take place from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening, followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m., Wednesday, January 17, both at H.M. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth, Rev. Don Moses officiating. Interment will follow in the Carleton Cemetery. It has been requested that there be family flowers only. Donations in memory of Abel may be made to the Carleton Cemetery, the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation or to a charity of your choice. A special thanks to Dr. Peter Loveridge for his care over the years. The family also wishes to thank the 3rd floor nursing staff at the Yarmouth Hospital for the wonderful care and compassion they gave Abel and his family during this last week.
