Obituary for
Mary Harwood Sherwood (Clarke)
Mary Harwood SHERWOOD née Clarke
1921 — 2018
Mary passed away in Ottawa on December 3, 2018. She was born in Iquique, Chile, the second daughter of British expatriates Philip Harwood Clarke and Beatrice Mary (Jenkins) Clarke. Mary enjoyed a pleasant and carefree childhood in Iquique, where her father was manager of some nitrate mines. When she was ten, the family moved to Santiago, and Mary attended Santiago College. In early 1942, Mary and her sister Estelle took a long, perilous sea journey to the United Kingdom to join the Royal Navy Wrens. Mary served in London and Dover after receiving her commission and then volunteered for overseas service in Colombo, Ceylon. It was there in June 1944 that she met the late Lt.Cdr. Fred Sherwood RCNVR of Ottawa, who was in command of an RN submarine. The relationship flourished, and they married in 1946. The couple eventually settled in Ottawa where they raised their family.
Mary was blessed with a warm, good-natured, and unpretentious personality. She is remembered as a devoted and kind wife, a loving mother, a compassionate aunt, a doting grandmother, and a gentle great-grandmother.
Predeceased by her parents; her husband Fred; and her sisters Betty, Estelle, and Dorothy. Mary is survived by her children: Marion, Philip, and Tim (Mary Jane); grandchildren Toby (Zoe) and Susannah (Ben); and great-grandchildren Rufus, Byron, Everly, and Clementine.
Our family is deeply grateful to the caregivers of Champlain LHIN and especially to the staff of The Edinburgh Retirement Residence for their consistent kindness and high level of care to Mary and Fred over the past fifteen years.
Memorial service to be held at The Church of St. Bartholomew, 125 MacKay Street, Ottawa, at 11.00 A.M. on Friday January 18. Light refreshments will be served in the Church hall following the service.
