Surrounded by the love of her family Shirley Grace Barter passed peacefully in her home into the arms of angels on Wednesday, November 7, 2018. Born in Calais, ME she was the beloved daughter to the late Thora (O’Brien) and Richard Smith.
Shirley is survived by six loving daughters Sheila Herbert (Victor), Janet Bourque (Doug) of Oxford, ME, Thora Despres (Ivan), Donna Moffatt (Gerald), Elsie Tompkins and Gracie Barter; as well as 16 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents Shirley is predeceased by her loving husband of 47 years John Melvin Barter; her daughter and namesake Shirley Grace Millson Zundel; brothers Dana and Richard Smith; sons-in-law Fred Moffatt, Paul Hebert and Donald Tompkins; and grandson Jordan Tompkins.
Shirley attended Baxter School for the deaf in Portland, ME.
Shirley and John had been active members of the Saint John Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services Inc., as well as volunteers for many years for the Festival by the Sea. Shirley will be remembered for her creativity and fun-loving personality.
Resting at Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John (646-2424) on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm. Her funeral service will be held from Fundy Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 11 am. A private family interment will take place in Ocean View Memorial Gardens at a later date. Remembrances in memory of Shirley may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, Bobby ‘s Hospice or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
