Obituary Overview
Bill Heinkel
Bill Heinkel
It was with heavy hearts and great sadness that we said goodbye to our dear Bill on November 3rd. Bill was a devoted husband, loving brother, supportive dad and the proud Papa of four grandsons. He was always a “glass half full” kind of guy. Always a smile on his face and ready to laugh. Even during the challenging times on his ALS journey, he had a positive attitude and courage beyond measure.
Bill loved life, but especially spending winters in Texas and summers at Sherwood Lake. He was a longtime chairman of Sherwood Lakes Local Roads Board. Bill was an avid curler, including taking on such roles as President of the Deer Lodge Curling Club and Secretary Treasurer of the Past Presidents Association of Manitoba. He loved golfing and even became a trophy winning shuffler when he was in Texas. Bill was also an active member and president of the Venio Dictum Toast Masters Club for many years.
Bill grew up in Pine Falls, Manitoba. He moved to Winnipeg at the age of 18 to attend the University of Manitoba and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. He then began his career of 42 years at Great West Life. He started in Underwriting but by retirement, he was the Director of Group Life and Disability Benefits. Bill decided to retire in 2003 to maximize the time he could spend with his four grandsons.
Bill is survived by his wife Jean of 52 years; daughters, Colleen, Susan (Darren); grandsons Jake, Ryan, Brett, Drew; Sisters Lyn ( Georgie), Margy (Brent); nephews, Mike (Kim) and “first born” Andrew; nieces Heather (Greg), Brooke, Corynn (Ryan); sister in law Hazel (Ken), great – niece, Larissa, great-nephew Mason.
Bill was predeceased by parents Helen and Jack, parents in law Natalie “Dolly” and Roy, and brother – in – law Ron.
Special thanks to Caroll (O.T.) at Community Therapy Services; Dr. Joanna Webb and to the ALS Society of Manitoba.
