Elsie Christine Hillis
Elsie Christine Hillis (nee Torgerson) passed away on Tuesday, October 30, 2018, at the age of 87 years, to be with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Elsie was born on February 21, 1931, in La Glace, AB to Theodore and Sigrid Torgerson. She was the oldest of six children and grew up in a very loving and welcoming home. She attended school at La Glace and Wembley for her first nine years and then moved with her Grandpa Brekkaas to Grande Prairie to take her grade 10 and 11 at the high school. She then went home to help her mother at their sawmill and completed her grade 12 by correspondence.
Elsie took secretarial courses at the Business College and went on to have a career in the legal system, starting with Mr. Lawlor. After an eighteen-year break to raise a family of five children, Elsie received employment with Charlie MacDonnell and ending with Steve Burgess, retiring in 1993. She always said that it was the perfect profession for her. She loved her job, her co-workers, the clients, and the sense of satisfaction she received from it.
Elsie met and married John “Jack” Hillis on July 14, 1954. They spent their first seven years of married life travelling around the Peace Country, while Jack worked on road construction. In 1961, they settled in a small bungalow on Hillcrest Drive. In 1966, they moved their family of five children to the acreage on Wapiti Road. After Jack passed away in 1997, Elsie moved into Grande Prairie once again.
Elsie spent her final years residing in Mackenzie Place and then the Grande Prairie Care Centre. She was surrounded by loving family until the end. The family would like to extend their gratitude to all the medical personnel for the exceptional care Elsie received.
Elsie leaves to mourn sons: Warren (Audrey), Grant, and Cameron (Monica); daughters: Sandra and Tracey; twelve grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren; brothers: Torger (Mary) Torgerson, and Kenneth (Mabel) Torgerson; sister Carolyn (Dan) Robinson; brothers in-law: Herman Frantzen, and Colin Griffith; and sister in-law Margaret Hillis.
Elsie was predeceased by her parents Theodore and Sigrid Torgerson; husband Jack Hillis; sisters: Christine Frantzen and Valerie Griffith; sisters in-law: Hazel Torgerson, Audrey McLaren, and Beryl McLaren; brothers in-law: Leonard Hillis, and Ross McLaren.
A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, November 9, 2018, at 1:00pm, at Christian Fellowship Assembly in Grande Prairie (11449 92 St.).
