Obituary Overview
Evelyn Kwasnitza
Peacefully, with her family at her side, Mom passed away at age 77, on Sunday, October 21, 2018 at Riverview Health Centre.
Left to cherish Mom’s memory are partner Tom Metcalfe; sons Scott (Monica) and Garth; “third son” Geordie Cruickshank (Tara); granddaughters Janna (Adam), Courtney (Matt) and Chloe; great-grandchildren Harper Evelyn and Landon; sister Dorothy Bailey of Alliston, Ontario; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Mom was predeceased by husband Garry Kwasnitza; parents Albert and Agnes Briggs; sister Eileen Briggs; and brother Thomas Briggs.
Mom was a dedicated elementary school teacher for 30 years. She was 19 years old when her teaching career began in April 1960 with the Toronto Board of Education. She retired from Buchanan School in St. James-Assiniboia School Division in 1995. Teaching was one of Mom’s true loves, where her caring personality made a difference in the lives of countless students. Mom believed that there was nothing like a good hug to lift the spirits of a young child.
Travel was another of Mom’s great passions. She liked visiting warm locales where she had a special gift for endearing herself to the locals, especially young children. Youngsters on Australia’s Gold Coast could hardly wait for daily songs and stories from “Miss Evelyn”. Mom enjoyed numerous trips with friends, where laughter and good times were in abundant supply.
Mom’s greatest joy in life was her family. She loved Christmas gatherings and enjoyed hearing about the exploits of her granddaughters and great-grandchildren. Mom’s extensive photo album collection is testament to the many good times shared with family.
Mom was a caring friend, role model, and mentor who was never afraid to dispense straight-talking advice. Mom was beloved for her generosity, unconditional love, and kind heart. Mom left us with a wealth of happy memories and will live forever in our hearts. She had a unique gift for making you feel like the most special person in her life.
Mom, now that you’re in God’s hands, the pain is gone, and you can rest forever in peace with Dad and your beloved pets, Snoopy and Peanut.
Special thanks to the staff of CancerCare Manitoba and Riverview Palliative Care – especially Dr. Ted St. Godard – for gracing Mom with a peaceful and dignified passing. Mom was “footloose and fancy free” until the end.
As was Mom’s wish, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 3 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue.
Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends so wish, contributions may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or Riverview Health Centre Palliative Care.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Evelyn Kwasnitza 2018..
