Brian Harris Murray
1949-2018
It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of
Brian Harris Murray, 68, on September 29, 2018 at St.
Martha’s Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
He was our anchor; he filled our lives with steadfast and
unconditional love and compassion. Brian was a remarkably gentle,
loving man, who touched the lives of the many people he encountered,
always treating everyone with generosity and respect. He showed us how
to put others’ needs first.
Brian, a highly respected member of the Royal Canadian
Mounted Police for almost 38 years, was recognized with numerous
awards over a distinguished career. Following training at the RCMP
academy, he served at various detachments in Manitoba before being
transferred to Antigonish. In his years with the force, he was proud
of his many accomplishments, especially those achieved during crucial
times when working with the Underwater Recovery Team, whom he
considered his second family. He was a valued member of this close
brotherhood for over 17 years. Brian also served as a Community
Policing Officer and as a representative of the Member Employee
Assistance Program.
After his retirement from the force, Brian was elected to the
Strait Regional School Board where he proudly served for two terms
during difficult times of transition, for which he was also recognized
with an award for outstanding service. His colleagues considered him a
leader in their work on the board.
Brian was a patient man who provided us a foundation to live
our lives upon. He believed in and lived truth and integrity
in his work and in his family life, offering many words of wisdom with
a smile. This honesty was summed up in a phrase we often heard:
“What you see is what you get, and that is not going to
change.”
He was passionate about motorcycles, especially when Rita was
along for the ride. He took delight in sailing and he dreamed of his
grandchildren becoming his crew. He leaves behind his
childhood sweetheart, best friend and devoted wife of 46 years, Rita
(MacLean). Together they shared love for their three cherished
children; daughter Kerri-Lyn (Jason Brown), and sons Jonathon
(Michelle), and Jeffery, all of whom reside in Antigonish. He is
survived by his most precious grandchildren who were the apple of his
eye; Marley, Ben, Andy, Sam and Eli; he is also survived by his
brother John (Pauline) (Sydney,NS), his dear mother-in-law Frances
MacDonald (Antigonish); sisters-in-law, Yvonne (Michael),
Miriam (Duane); brothers-in-law Danny (Debra), Bobby (Cindy), Brian
(Angela), and many beloved nieces, nephews and friends. He was
predeceased by his loving parents, Harris and Phyllis Murray, and
father-in-law Garfield MacLean.
We are forever indebted to the medical professionals who
served Brian well. The family extends sincere gratitude to Dr. Steven
Gallant, Brian’s long-time physician. We wish also to
acknowledge Dr. Michelle Murphy.
