Obituary for
Jacob Buhr
BUHR, JACOB
Jacob (Jake) Buhr of Kitchener passed away peacefully at age 93 on Sunday, September 23, 2018, at Grand River Hospital ICU with daughter Karen at his side. Jake was raised on a mixed farm in Gretna, Manitoba, the son of John S. and Sarah Buhr. Pre-deceased by his dear wife Dorothy MacAllister in January 2001; by brother Diedrich, by sisters-in-law Christine Buhr, Frieda Buhr and Pauline Buhr; and brothers-in-law Gordon Gibbons and Jake Penner. Jake is survived by daughters Patricia Parry, and Karen Buhr and her special friend Kyle; by grandchildren John, David, and Sarah King (Erik); and by great grand-child Lucas King. Also survived by sisters Helen Gibbons, Greta Penner, Mary Nightingale (Don); and by brothers John, Tony (Helen), Martin (Nell), and Albert (Kathy) and cousin Jeannie (Herman) Rempel who was raised by Jake’s parents. Jake is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Jake trained at Camp Borden and in Europe as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces in the armoured corps. Thankfully, WWII ended prior to requiring his front-line service. He was a long-time employee of Electrohome as an electronics engineer specializing in sound systems and projectors. His talent and love for mathematics continued throughout his life. Hobbies included playing the guitar and harmonica, while accompanying himself on vocals to the delight of his younger siblings. In later years he continued his enjoyment of music by playing the organ and piano. He served for many years as an elder at Trinity United Church. Due to his background on a farm he enjoyed having a city-owned garden plot for several years. Proud member of the PC Party serving on the local boards at both the Federal and Provincial levels where he was greatly esteemed for his work with statistics. As a widower, Jake evolved into a gourmet cook hosting family get-togethers with multiple mouth-watering entrees.
Jake was pleased to have such a loving family, who showed love for him over the years, and care and concern for his health during the past year. He noted that he had lived a good long life, and for this he was grateful.
As per Jake’s request, there will be no visitation, and a memorial service for family members will be held at Henry Walser Funeral Home on Saturday, October 13, 2018. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to Mennonite Central Committee Ontario. The family would like to thank the staff at Grand River ICU for their care of Jake.
