In Loving Memory Of
Emma Brauer
Emma Brauer, a longtime resident of Hines Creek, AB, then Grande Prairie, AB, passed away in her home surrounded by her family. Emma was 88 years old.
Emma was born to August and Herlinde Sterk in Ostrowek, Poland on March 26,1930. She was the oldest of 5 children. During WWII, Emma’s family fled to West Germany because they were still considered German citizens. She worked on farms then later factories in Germany to help provide for the family. Emma knew Erwin Brauer as their families attended the same church in Germany. Erwin immigrated to Canada in 1951. A while later a family member did some matchmaking to reconnect them together. After writing letters back and forth, Emma immigrated to Canada in October 1955 and they were married in December of that year.
Erwin and Emma farmed just west of Hines Creek until 1980. Four children were born: Ruth, Ernest “Ernie”, Irene, and Lori. Emma was a hard-working farm woman. She not only raised 4 children but also raised milking cows, pigs, chickens, and a very large garden. They would go fishing and berry picking and food was canned and pickled. When the children were young, there were not a lot of extras, but they always ate well. Emma always made homemade bread and the perogies for family occasions right up until she moved into Wild Rose Manor in Grande Prairie.
At a young age she learned how to sew, knit, and crochet. Emma sewed clothes for her young family, and was still sewing/altering her own clothes. The day of her passing, she was altering a quilt that she had made.
Faith was always important to Emma. She was a member of the Lutheran Church her entire life and participated in many church activities.
Emma will be sadly missed by her children: Ruth (John) Hanson and their children Colin and Karen; Ernie (Lorraine) Brauer and their son Justin; Irene (Gary) Goebel and their son Nathan (Sharon) Goebel; and Lori (Troy) Kamieniecki and their children Mathew and Katrina. Emma is also survived by family in Germany, sisters: Gunda Hess, Else Kellner, and Herta Hartman; brother Eduard (Lisel) Sterk; as well as many nieces and nephews and their children.
Emma was predeceased by her husband Erwin in June 2008, daughter in-law Louise (nee Teel) Brauer in December 1988, sister in-law Erna and husband Hermann, and brother in-law Eric Kellner.
