It is with sadness that the family announces the passing of Verne Leland Vopni, at his home in Swan River, Manitoba on June 30, 2018 at the age of 93 years.
Verne was born in the Harlington District on January 27th, 1925 to the late Haldor and Helen Vopni. He received his education at the Harlington and Kenville schools, as well as the University of Manitoba. Verne served in the Royal Canadian Navy during the second World War.
He married his wife of almost 69 years, Sarah Waschenfelder in 1949, and together they farmed in the Harlington district. Later in life they moved to their Swan River home but enjoyed going out to the farm a few times a week.
Verne loved many things in life; to name a few; photography, travelling, camping and nature, planting thousands of trees throughout his lifetime. He was an environmental conservationist.
He and Sarah made many trips west where they visited their favorite camping spots, took beautiful scenic pictures, and kept notes of all their vacations, which began in 1966 totalling approximately 75 trips. They had recently returned from Pincher Creek, one of his favorite spots, and he was already talking about going again.
Although Harlington was always where Verne’s roots were, he really enjoyed their time at the west coast, spending six winters in Nanoose Bay on Vancouver Island.
Verne is survived by his beloved wife and best friend Sarah; guardian twin sons Thomas Ramsey (Joyce) of Regina, & Patrick Ramsey (Jackie) of Brandon; sister Lorraine Loptson (George Struck) of Wpg.; sisters in law Alice Vopni of Swan River and Dora Burt of Winnipeg, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents Haldor and Helen Vopni and his brothers Robert and Donald.
In keeping with Verne’s wishes, cremation has taken place. He will be laid to rest at a later date in the Riverside Cemetery in Harlington.
Paull Funeral Home and Crematorium are honoured to have served the family.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Verne Leland Vopni January 27 1925 June 29 2018 (age 93).source
