Life Story for
Donald Slingerland
SLINGERLAND, Donald H. – June 10, 1929 – June 27, 2018. Don peacefully left this world surrounded with love and holding hands with his high school sweetheart and soulmate married 67 years Ginny (Virginia nee Petrunick), children David (Laurie deceased), Nancy (Kent Diamond) and family friend Ineke, and was met on the other side by his son Greg (survived by wife Jennifer Sumner) and daughter-in-law Laurie. We are sure Greg has a detailed travel itinerary planned and Laurie has made her awesome cheesecake to celebrate his arrival.
He will be deeply missed as grandpa of Erin (Jeremy), Jason (Robin), Melissa (Ryan), Michael, Rachel and great grandpa of Kallee, Austin, Delaney, Wilder, Paisley, Abigail, Olivia and great-great grandpa of Kinsley and Macey.
Don was born at the old cottage hospital in Niagara-on-the-Lake and lived all of his life in St. Davids and Niagara-on-the-Lake area, where along with Ginny lived a lifetime of service to their community. In 2003 they both received the Niagara-on-the-Lake Volunteer of the Year award. Don was a long standing member of St. Davids- Queenston Church as an envelope steward, choir member and on property committee, he was the only remaining St. Davids Lions Charter Member, a 33 year member of St. Davids Volunteer Fire Department, he also supported the 1st St.Davids Scout Group Committee for 57 years, and volunteered with the Upper Canada Lodge Auxiliary. He was also a Butler’s Rangers United Empire Loyalist and in 1987 retired after 37 years with Ontario Hydro, most of those years spent at Sir Adam Beck generating stations Queenston.
Don’s children and grandchildren will fondly remember him whizzing them around on water skis at the cottage near Parry Sound and for his kind and gentle spirit and living his life as a “gentleman – gentle man”. He was a man whose handshake was better than any signed contract and whose quick wit and sense of humour never missed a beat. Don lived a life of integrity, honesty, loyalty and love of family.
Family will welcome all at Morse and Son Funeral Home, 5917 Main Street, Niagara Falls on Thursday July 5th from 2-4pm and 7-9pm and at a celebration of Don’s life at St. Davids-Queenston United Church, 1453 York Rd., St. Davids on Friday July 6th at 2 pm with internment to follow.
