Obituary Overview
Remembering Lily
With great sadness, we announce our beloved mother and grandmother Lily passed away peacefully with her children by her side. Poh-Poh will be lovingly remembered by her children Stanley, Walter, Frances (Randy), Shirley, David and granddaughters Marie and Stephanie. Lily was predeceased by her husband Suey and by her mother Yuk.
Lily was born in Heshan, China, then moved to Hong Kong in her late teens and worked as a seamstress. In 1964, she married Suey and immigrated to Canada. Together, they owned and operated the Rio Cafe restaurant in Souris, Manitoba, where she learned English and formed many lasting friendships. Despite the long hours working at the restaurant, she prioritized the needs of her children before her own – cooking delicious home cooked meals, teaching math & Chinese, saving to ensure they all could attend post secondary education and encouraging them to ‘keep going’ and to try their best. In 2003, Lily & Suey retired and moved to Winnipeg to be closer to most of her children. She continued making many friendships at church and in the ‘big city’. In her retirement, Lily enjoyed going to the beach, completing word search puzzles, spending time in casinos and travelling to visit friends and family. She especially enjoyed time with her granddaughters Marie and Stephanie and watching Walter’s many half marathons. Some of her favourite places she visited included Clear Lake, Grand Beach, Banff, Vancouver, Florida and Singapore.
The family would like to thank all the wonderful caring staff of Comforts of Home Care over the past two years after her stroke, as well as the hospital staff at Victoria General and Grace who provided compassionate care. Thank you to all Mom’s friends and family for their friendship, prayers and love – she really appreciated all the support!
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Lily Mui Yuen 2018.source
