Obituary for
Mrs. Sonja Maznyk
It is with profound sadness that the family of Sonja Maznyk, age 98 years, announces her peaceful passing on Saturday, April 28, 2018 in the TBRHSC with her family by her side.
Sonja was born on August 29, 1919 in Razniw, Ukraine. Sonja, her husband Theodore, and son Walter came to Port Arthur to meet her sister Anna in 1949 after WWII. She was a long-time resident of Port Arthur and dearly loved her neighbours. She was employed for many years with CP Rail as a chef before her retirement, Sonja was an amazing cook and had a strong passion for cooking. She was proficient in six languages, this skill allowed her to be employed by the District Court as the Court Interpreter. Sonja was an avid gardener, known for her flower beds and winning many awards for best produce at annual fairs. She enjoyed painting, photography, sewing, cross stitching and was always volunteering. She was awarded a 20-year volunteer award by the Ministry of Ontario. Sonja and her husband were life members of the former Church of the Holy Protection and were one of its original founders. She worked very hard and devoted many years to her church, including countless dozens of pyrophy and holubtsi, as well as fundraising and taking part in numerous activities and functions. Sonja was also a long-time member of the Port Arthur Prosvita, Ukrainian Catholic Women¹s League and Choir.
Sonja was a loving mother and is survived by her devoted son whom she was
very proud of, Walter (Donna). Sonja’s home and family were her great source
of joy and she was devoted to her grandchildren, Brea and Mathew. Sonja’s
love and commitment to her grandchildren were unconditional and selfless.
She was proud of Mathew’s accomplishments and she and Brea shared a very
special and loving bond. She was especially proud of Brea becoming a
nurse. Sonja cherished her many friends, she enjoyed meeting up with old
acquaintances to reminisce about the past. Sonja was a very caring, giving
and an inspirational beautiful lady who loved nothing more than life’s
simple pleasures and always put the needs of others before her own. She
will be remembered for her kindness, compassion and boundless generosity.
Sonja is also survived by her niece Karen (Erik), and nephews Mark and Dean.
Sonja was predeceased by her husband Theodore; her parents Michael
and Helen; her two sisters Anna, Mary; and brothers Bill, Fred, John and
Steve.
A private ceremony will be held for family at a later date. In lieu of
flowers, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation in Sonja’s memory would
be appreciated.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Sonja Maznyk 1919 2018.source
