Edgar L. “Ted” Sceles
13 March , 1943 – 15 April , 2018
Edgar L. (Ted) Sceles
Age 75, of Bedford, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2018 at the VG Palliative Care unit with his family by his side. Born March 13, 1943, and raised in Boylston, Guysborough County, he was the son of the late Edgar W. and Jessie (MacKenzie) Sceles.
Ted was a loving husband and best friend to his wife of 48 years Marilyn (Weeks); a devoted father to daughter Heather, Halifax, and son Dave (Christa), Moncton; and proud Grampy to grandson Devin. Ted also was a kind brother to Ronald (Gael) and brother-in-law Scott (Elena) Weeks. Ted is survived by numerous nephews, a niece, and many cousins.
Ted graduated from Dalhousie University in 1967 with a Bachelor of Commerce (Honors) degree. He then went on to article with Peat, Marwick Mitchell (now KPMG), and obtained his Chartered Accountant designation in 1969. He was employed with the Stevens Group in Dartmouth for 33 years, the majority of time as Chief Financial Officer. During his employment he was involved in several business related organizations, including the Construction Association of Nova Scotia as Treasurer, and Atlantic Home Warranty Corporation as Treasurer and President. In later years, he received his CPA designation in the USA through the University of Illinois.
Throughout his life, Ted was always willing to provide financial advice and oversight to various organizations. He was a former Treasurer and elder of Bedford United Church and served on various Church committees. He also assisted non-profit organizations such as Beacon House, and until recently, Ted was a Trustee of Brookside Cemetery Corporation and Treasurer of Fort Sackville Foundation. Ted was recently the recipient of the House of Commons sesquicentennial pin, honouring his volunteerism.
Ted had a lifelong interest in politics, and was Official Agent of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party for nine years. He acted in the same capacity for candidates in 15 provincial and federal elections, going back to the 1970s. He was a Board member of the Halifax West Liberal Association for over 20 years.
Ted was a member of the Mayflower Curling Club for 35 plus years, and more recently a member of Probus Club. Ted had a passion for his roots and childhood community and over the years he did a great deal of research on family history acting as the unofficial Sceles Family historian. He always looked forward to summer holidays at his cottage at MacPherson’s Lake, Guysborough County, and greatly enjoyed the many family gatherings and activities each year at the lake with numerous cousins and friends. He could most often be found around the cottage with paint brush or power saw in hand.
Ted gave whole-heartedly to everything he undertook leaving a proud legacy for his family.
The last several years Ted bravely coped with a deteriorating lung condition caused by sarcoidosis, an inflammatory disease. As his condition worsened, Ted was able to remain at home with the dedicated help and support of the nurses and doctors of the Palliative Care Team, continuing care assistants, and the VON. The family wishes to extend thanks to each of them, along with Dr. H. Mishra and Dr. M. Chiasson for their professional care. The family is also eternally grateful to friends and family for all their kind and thoughtful gestures with gifts of food, phone calls, or visits over many months. Special appreciation also extended to Rev. David Hart and Rev. Diane Tingley for pastoral care visits.
Visitation will take place at Snow’s Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax on Wednesday April 18, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00pm. A Celebration of Life will be held at Bedford United Church on Thursday April 19, 2018 at 10:30am with reception to follow in the Church hall. Cremation has taken place with internment at Brookside Community Cemetery on a later date.
