Addison, Malcolm (Mack) Douglas Jan. 11, 1940 – Mar. 21, 2018
God called his name so gently that only he could hear; no one heard the footsteps of the angels drawing near. Softly from the shadows there came a gentle call. He closed his eyes and went to sleep…he quietly left us all. It is with broken hearts and at peace with his passing that the family announce the passing of Mack at the Miramichi Senior Citizens Home on Wednesday, March 21, 2018, following a lengthy, courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease and its complications. Born January 11, 1940, in Montreal, Mack was the son of the late Douglas Addison and Louise (Berndes) Addison-Bowes. He was raised by his paternal grandparents the late Alex and May (Storey) Addison. He leaves to mourn his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth (St. Coeur); their children: Anne, Laura (Rick) of Miramichi and Christopher (Elaine) of Grand Bay. He was “Grampy” to Mark (deceased), Matthew (Crystal), Morgan and Zachary. He also leaves behind a large extended family of brothers and sisters in-law, nieces and nephews. Mack wanted no eulogy and requested that his funeral be kept small. However, we would be amiss if we didn’t share a few things about him. His aversion to a eulogy came from a fear that the ordinary would be made extra ordinary and doing the right thing would be turned into the stuff of heroics. He was neither a villain nor a hero. He was one of the vast majority of mere mortals who populated the mundane, middle ground between these extremes and whose lives often don’t make for exciting reading. Reflecting on Mack’s life through the fog of grief and cloud of tears, there is nothing in us that seeks to glorify or canonize him. He was a steady worker, a breadwinner who provided for his family, a husband who loved his wife and a father who loved his children and grandchildren and he was loved in return. Orphaned at a young age Mack joined the military and became a Modern-day veteran. He began his military career in the Reserves at age 16. The following year he transferred to the Regular Forces. He wore the uniform proudly serving 25 years in the RCAF/CAF as M/Cpl Weapons Tech Air Defence. He had multiple postings to CFB Chatham, Zweibrucken, Germany and Cold Lake AB. During his career Mack periodically took advantage of courses and training being offered. He performed at a high level always achieving positive feedback and praise from his chain of command. While on detachment in Bermuda in 1980 Mack received a commendation for his quick action during a tornado. He was credited with saving the life of a co-worker and preventing the loss/extensive damage to an aircraft. He was decorated with the NATO Special Services Medal and CF Decoration Medal and Clasp CD for service. Following retirement he served 6.5 years in the CF Supplementary Reserve. He was then employed for 12 years, Private Guard with Pinkerton’s Security Services of Canada, including 10 years as Detention Guard for the Newcastle/Miramichi Police Dept.
Mack enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing darts and pool, but golf was his passion. He was a longtime member of the Miramichi Golf and Country Club until Parkinson’s forced him to cease playing the game he loved. He was a 37 consecutive years member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br.10 Miramichi. Mack fought a valiant battle and when the medical professionals could do no more for him and a cure was not to be, we prayed that God in His mercy would ease his burden and grant him eternal rest. He will be missed. The cremation he wished has been professionally and graciously arranged by Bell’s Funeral Home Services. Visitation will be Sunday, March 25, 7-9 p.m. with the memorial service being held at 2 pm on Monday, March 26, at Bell’s Chapel officiated by Father Antonio Reyes. Interment will be in St. Mary’s cemetery at a later date. Flowers and donations are gratefully declined. If you wish to honour Mack’s memory, a small act of kindness or lending a helping hand to someone in need would be appreciated by the family. “What we keep in memory is ours forever.”
