BOURQUE, Jean Frederick – Age 92, passed away Sunday, March 18, 2018 at Yarmouth Regional Hospital with his family by his side. Born in Sluice Point on October 7th, 1925 he was the son of the late Freddie A. and M. Delphine (Hubbard) Bourque. At three years of age they moved to Hubbard’s Point where he was raised. Frederick began working for Willie Doucette on his strawberry farm. He then went hand-lining with his father. In the spring of 1945, he completed basic army training in Yarmouth, and while waiting in Halifax for deployment, the war ended. After discharge he returned to fishing. In 1952, Frederick purchased a lobster boat and commenced lobster fishing that fall season, and every subsequent season, for a decade. In the spring and summer seasons, he would long-line and swordfish for Captain Rodgerson out of Port La Tour. In the late 1950s, he began fishing for Captain Billy Atkinson, out of Yarmouth, while continuing to lobster fish the fall seasons. In the early 1960s, during the spring and summer seasons, he began scallop fishing with Captain d’Entremont. In the late 1960s, he decided to pursue lobster fishing full-time, and harvest Irish moss in the summers. In the 1970s, Frederick took over his father’s Irish moss business out of the Sluice Point wharf while continuing to lobster fish. During the winter months, he would repair Kiack nets for local fishermen. In the mid-1990s, he retired from fishing and began vegetable gardening. He spent many hours volunteering at St. Anne’s cemetery, he was a former member of Wedgeport Legion branch #155, an active member of Bishop Albert Lemenage Knights of Columbus Counsel #5988, and ended his working career at Wood’s strawberry farm. He is survived by his sons Warren (Evelyn) of Lake Charles, LA and Curtis of Tusket; daughters Colette (Percy Cottreau) of Wedgeport and Lynn (Barney Corporon) of Yarmouth; sister Lillian Melanson of Tusket; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 63 years the former Fannie Doucette, infant son Alden, daughter Natalie, sister Helene, and brothers Leslie and Robert. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth. A visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, March 22nd with prayers at 8 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday at 10 a.m. in Saint Anne’s Catholic Church, Ste. Anne-de-Ruisseau, Father Albenie d’Entremont Officiating. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to St. Anne’s Cemetery Fund.
