Obituary Overview
Charlotte Patricia Campbell (nee Soucy)
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Charlotte Patricia Campbell, age 92 on March 13, 2018. Left to cherish her memory are, son, Bruce (Dianne), daughter, Heather Polonuk (Grant), grandsons David (Crystal), Colin, Andrew (Alexandra), Ian (Bethany), Matthew, great grandchildren, Damian, Charlotte, Florence, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Charlotte is predeceased by her husband, Bob, her brothers, Gerard, Leo, Roger and sisters, Irene and Stella.
Charlotte was born in Freemont Saskatchewan, on August 24, 1925. Growing up during the depression and losing her mother, Leda, at age 13 was difficult. Charlotte often would say, “When life takes something from you, God will always open another door,” and it was so in her case. Charlotte was sent to live with her Aunt Robena and Uncle Arthur, in Winnipeg, where she went to school, graduating from River Elm School in the 1940s.
Charlotte worked for the CNR, as a clerk in the express office. It was here she met her love, future husband, Bob. Their spring wedding in Winnipeg was interrupted due to the 1950 flood. Not to be undone, they relocated their wedding to Burnaby, BC, where Bob’s brother, Gordon and wife, Violet, lived. They were married 59 years.
Within a few years their two children were born. Charlotte, like most women of her day was a multitasker, holding a part time job with the Winnipeg Free Press, looking after a home and finances, caring for her invalid father, William, and sister, Stella, as well as two precocious children and a dog. Charlotte and Bob fostered several children over time leaving the best for last, Candice. Charlotte was a modest and humble person, always thinking of other people. She always tried to live by the Golden Rule (treat others as you would be treated). Charlotte took strength from her religious beliefs. She would often read the bible or sing hymns with her bedridden father.
After retiring in 1984 from the Manitoba Government Health Services, Charlotte and Bob enjoyed summers at their Winnipeg Beach cottage and winters in Mesa, Arizona. She loved spending time with family and friends, reading, shopping, baking apple pies, watching classic movies, and collecting Royal Doulton figurines. She volunteered with the Grace Hospital Auxiliary where she received a twenty year pin.
As Bob’s health declined, she was his devoted care giver, who tolerated his companion dog, Ming. Following her husband’s passing in 2008, she continued to volunteer and travel. Puerto Vallarta, Ireland, Scotland, France and Montreal were places she visited. She moved to Sturgeon Creek Retirement Living, and then the Maples Personal Care Home.
The family wish to thank the nursing staff at the Maples, especially Eva and Troy, for their compassionate care.
Funeral service will be held on April 3, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Winnipeg, Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, remembrance may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.
