Obituary for Betty Krysa
Betty Krysa of Edmonton, Alberta passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at the age of 84 years. Betty was born in Edmonton on May 13, 1933.
Most who knew Betty would describe her, first and foremost, as elegant. She and her husband, Leo, built a family and a family business in Edmonton. They turned their success into community contributions through the Leo J. Krysa Family Foundation. Betty loved to travel, and would return home after weeks abroad exploring in style with Leo to share travel tales with her grandchildren. She’d also bring home the occasional gift–often, bathing suits from Hawaii. She was generous and kind and made everyone feel at home. She was a very good seamstress and made dolls and blankets for her grandchildren. She also helped them out when a ballet costume needed sequins sewn on here, or a strap there. She carried on culinary traditions from her Eastern European background by cooking delicious meals for her family, especially at Christmas. She and Leo knew how to throw parties, but she was very happy to let her husband take centre stage. Later on, she and Leo recruited their grandchildren to fill that role, which taught them to be confident public speakers–one of the most valuable gifts they received from their grandparents.
Betty is survived by her children, Cathy (Roger Palmer), John (Karen Krysa) and Eric; and her grandchildren, Alison, Lana, Eve, Daniel, Leo, Jacqueline, Bradley and Graham. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Toby Krysa (Dallas); and nieces and nephews she was very fond of. She was predeceased by her husband, Leo John Krysa; infant son, James; her mother and father, Mary and Kost (Gus) Hudyma; her sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Lloyd Johnson; and dear cousins, June and Hugh Ryan.
Thank you to doctors Armstrong, Naker and Shibata for their very compassionate care.
In respect of Betty’s wishes, there will be a family graveside service at a later date. In lieu of other tributes, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
