Obituary of William McKinley
McKINLEY, William Herbert (Herb) (Sept. 30, 1922 – Nov. 17, 2017) – Peacefully at Brierwood Gardens LTC in his 96th year. Beloved husband of Kathryn (Burrill) for 64 years. Dearly loved father of Marty and his wife Kathy (Steele) and extremely proud papa of Meghan and Michael and baby-to-be (McCreadie) and Mike and Amanda (Cooper). Also papa to his special pug «Roxy». Herb was the son of Frances and William and had one sister Madge Amy (deceased) and one living sister-in-law Joan Benson (Bill deceased) and many nieces and nephews that he admired greatly. Herb was a veteran of WW II. He served in London, Belgium, Holland and France. Upon his return to Canada he attended McMaster University and earned his B.A. During his time there he won the tennis, table tennis, badminton and golf championships. He was extremely athletic and in his younger years played to a zero handicap in golf. He was also an excellent tennis player and once had the privilege of playing former world #1 Ranked player Don Budge. Herb was a longtime member of the Brantford Golf and Country Club, Dufferin Tennis Club, Birkett Lane Tennis Club, Brant Curling Club, and an original member of the Park Racquet Club. He and his wife Kathryn along with Terry and Shirley Patton represented Ontario in the Canadian Mixed Rose Bowl Curling Championships in 1969 representing the Brant Curling Club. He not only enjoyed watching his own grandchildren play their sports but he could often be seen at the Gretzky Arena watching all the other local athletes. He was their biggest fan. Herb and Kathryn enjoyed many winters in Florida at St. Pete’s Beach and also in Virginia Beach and summers on Stoney Lake. Cremation has taken place and a private family gathering will be held at the gravesite at a later date. Herb’s family would like to thank the staff at Brierwood Gardens in both retirement and LTC for the excellent care he has received. Also thanks to Dr. Dave Vincent and nurse Rose who went above and beyond. Funeral arrangements entrusted to McCleister Funeral Home. If you wish, donations in his memory can be made to the Brantford SPCA, which is dear to his heart for all his 7 boxer dogs and other furry friends he loved so much. «RIP Papa, you never gave up, you were a champ!»
