Walter Herman Steeves of Saint John, husband of the late Pearl Edith Steeves, died unexpectedly on Thursday, 28 December 2017 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Thus, death has unwittingly promoted him to the glory of heaven and reunited him with his wife of 68 years. Born in Moncton, NB on 19 July 1922, he was the firstborn of the 9 children of the late Vincent Steeves and the late Ruth Steeves (née Duffy) of Berry Mills, NB.
Walter was a veteran of World War II, serving in the RCAF for 3½ years. Following the war, he worked for N.B. Tel for 42 years, retiring in 1982 with fond memories of living in Moncton, Newcastle, Bathurst, Woodstock, Fredericton and Saint John. He was an avid sports fan and spent many enjoyable hours coaching youth hockey and ball teams. He was the charter secretary of the Nashwaaksis Y’s Men’s Club in 1960. He also served as Sports Director for the Town of Nashwaaksis. As an active member of Forest Hills Baptist Church in Saint John, he served on many boards and committees, including many years as a deacon. He also served as Christian Service Brigade Director for the Saint John area.
Walter is survived by his son Brian (Gail, née Corey), and daughter Sue Taylor (Rick), 6 grandchildren — Esther Steeves (Jarrod Bayne) of Edmonton, AB, Rachel Bryant (Charles) of Saint John, Angela Marshall (Peter) of Quispamsis, Meredith Reicker (Tony) of Sussex, Matthew (“Matt”) Taylor (Sheri) of Oromocto, and Emily Taylor of Calgary, AB — 11 great grandchildren — Alexander (“Alex”) Bayne, Charles (“Carl”) Bryant, Lillian (“Lillie”) Bryant, Nathan Marshall, Hannah Marshall, Abigail (“Abby”) Marshall, Brayden Reicker, Zachary (“Zach”) Reicker, Benjamin (“Ben”) Reicker, Clara Taylor, and Kaitlyn (“Kate”) Taylor — his sister Annie Sherwood (the late John Sherwood), a brother Norman (and his wife Ruth), and 2 sisters-in-law — Audrey Steeves (the late King Steeves) and Mae Steeves (the late Harold Steeves).
