He is survived by wife, Doreen; daughters, Susan (Randy) Steward, Linda Woznow and Carolyn (Tom) Field; 6 grandchildren: Kelly, Gregory, James, Derek, Jason and Rachel; mother-in-law, Bertha Robinson; his much-loved siblings, Pauline (Ron) LeBlanc, Elaine (Greg) Lysz, Dennis (Jean), Rick (Gloria); sister-in-law, Kathy Staniland; brother and sister in-law, Ernie and Donna Robinson and their families.
He was predeceased by his parents, Blanche and Albert; eldest brother, Roy; father in-law, Harvey; brother-in-law, Vernon; sister in-law, Beverly; infant children, Shannon and Jeffrey and infant granddaughter, Colleen.
Born in Barrhead on May 4, 1934 to Blanche (Fluet) and Albert Staniland, Art was a one of a kind person from the day he was born. He married his soulmate, Doreen, in 1957 and they were blessed with their children, Susan, Linda, Carolyn as well as two infant children, Shannon and Jeffrey who joined The Lord at birth. Dad always said, “I’ve never been bored a day in my life!” He lived life with inquisitiveness, enthusiasm and a wisely positive attitude. He loved days at the lake, road trips and family travels, the St. Louis Cardinals, the Oilers, music, and his backyard oasis. One of Art’s favorite parts of the day was sitting in his recliner with his morning paper and a GOOD cup of coffee, while surveying the vista of his backyard (although nothing ever changed over-night!). He always made time for good conversation with his children and grandchildren where he could his wisdom, strength, sense of humor, and unconditional love and support. This is what we will miss the most. We take comfort in knowing he waits for us to be reunited again one day.
As a business man, Art, was admired for his intelligence, integrity and good judgement. Graduating with a B.A. (Business) from the University of Alberta, Art went on to a successful career in advertising, home building and land development. He learned from some of the best and mentored many along the way.
Following graduation from university, Art began his career working for the Hudson Bay Company as a proof-reader who quickly progressed to Assistant Manager Advertising. In 1961, Art was recruited to join McConnell Homes, which later merged with NuWest Homes. Under Art’s leadership, NuWest increased sales to 700 homes which was a notable accomplishment in the industry. In 1965, Art joined the staff of Len Perry Homes as sales manager where he eventually rose to partner along with Keith Paddick, Gerry Haeberle and Len Perry. Upon Len’s retirement, Art took on the role of president. He was involved for many years with Carma Developers. In 1975, Art left Carma to form Consor Developers with several partners. After leaving Perry Homes in the early 1980’s, Art concentrated his efforts on land development with Consor Developers and remained involved until Consor was sold in 2015. Art continued to be active in many business activities right up until his passing.
The family wishes to thank the incredible staff of the ICU, Misericordia Hospital for their care and comfort.
‘BE NOT AFRAID, I GO BEFORE YOU ALWAYS.”
