Obituary for Mildred Eileen Corriveau
CORRIVEAU, Mildred Eileen
March 5, 1925 – March 28, 2017
Our hearts are heavy as we say good-bye to Millie, our wonderful Mom, Nana, Aunt and friend. She passed away in Kimberley and is now at peace, after a few difficult years. She was predeceased by her parents, Albin and Gerda Johnson, her five siblings and her husband, Vic, in 2006. Missing her are daughter, Terry Peachey (Walter), son, Gary (Candace) and grandsons, Brent and Ryan Peachey and Andrew Corriveau. She will be remembered by many nieces and nephews and long-time friend, Eileen Jardine. Special thanks to Sharon Gendall, a dear friend and angel in her life, and the many nurses and doctors who gave her kind, compassionate care.
Millie was born and raised in Kimberley, and felt it was a wonderful place to live. She married Vic in 1947, living for 50 years in the house which Vic skilfully renovated and enlarged. Millie and Vic raised their children with great love and wisdom, working hard to give them a good life.
Millie’s first job, after completing secretarial school, was with Cominco. She was a whiz on the typewriter, and enjoyed working with people. She later worked at the J.F. Haszard Clinic and the Kimberley Health Unit. Her favourite part of those jobs was helping with the babies when they were upset. She had a knack for calming babies. Although busy with her family and work, she found time to do community work, helping establish the Homemakers Organization in Kimberley, working at the blood donor clinics and raising money to build The Pines – Kimberley Special Care Home. Locals remember her too, as the lady who walked two hours every day up and down the hills from Happy Valley through Lois Creek and downtown. Her level of fitness, along with her immense courage and determination, helped her walk again, after a devastating injury at age 75.
Millie was a most remarkable, although modest, woman who learned to do just about anything she set her mind to. She could handle a shovel and a saw, re-upholster furniture, sew and knit beautiful clothes and cook incredible meals. Her special family dinners, always served on the good china, were feasts. When she baked, she always made enough cookies and jam to pass out to friends and shut-ins. She loved her flower garden and her orchids, and was fond of having fresh flowers inside her home.
She found the winters long, so she enjoyed travelling to warm places during the cold months. A family trip to Mexico was a highlight and she especially loved Hawaii and New Orleans.
Those wishing to remember Millie can make donations to the Canadian Cancer Society for Breast Cancer Research or The Kidney Foundation of Canada. At Millie’s request, there will be no service.
