Max Paul Schatz was born to Henry and Lydia Schatz in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan on February 23, 1931. As the son of a minister, his early public schooling was taken in various places, Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
In 1957 he graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Arts degree and after several years of summer school received his Bachelor of Education in 1964. In 1981 he completed the Manitoba School Business Officials’ Certificate Program from the University… Read More » of Manitoba.
Upon graduation in 1957 he entered the construction industry with the firm that had employed him during his university years. However, in 1959 he decided on a major career change and took a teaching position with the Swan Valley School Division at Minitonas, Manitoba. After two years in this position he was appointed principal of the Birch River Collegiate and served this school and the Birch River community for five years.
It was during his teaching tenure at Minitonas that he met his wife, Libby, and they were married on Canada Day in 1961. Max and Libby have two children; Marcia (married to Paul Kruger) and living in Stony Plain, Alberta and Trent, (married to Janice Kopp – grandchildren: Allison, Max and Jenine) and living in Beaumont, Alberta.
In 1966 Max accepted the principalship of Minnedosa Collegiate with the Rolling River School Division in Manitoba and served in this capacity until the fall of 1972 when he was appointed Assistant Superintendent. In 1981 the Boaard appointed him Superintendent.
Max led the usual hectic and busy life of an administrator. While employed by the Swan Valley School Division he was an active member of the local Teachers’ Association and served as its president during the 1963-64 school year. He was also active with the Rolling River Teachers’ Association during his term as principal of Minnedosa Collegiate and served as its president during 1969-70. Then for the next 17 years he maintained an active involvement with the Manitoba Association of School Superintendents serving on committees, chairing the Professional Development committee and serving as president.
In Minnedosa community affairs he dedicated considerable time and energy to the Rotary Club and served as its president in 1975-76. He served on the Board of Directors for the Minnedosa Credit Union for 13 years. He enjoyed his involvement at the Minnedosa Covenant Church as a choir member and Sunday School teacher.
Max retired from education June 30, 1989 and he and Libby moved to Penticton, British Columbia in the fall of that year. Max enjoyed his retirement years building yard and garden accessories, gardening, cycling and having coffee with his buddy, Don, as well as serving on the council of their Strata Corporation. St. Andrew’s Presbyterian in Penticton became his church home where for a number of years he served on the Board of Managers and sang in the church choir.
Health concerns in his latter years required a «home away from home». The Schatz family is grateful for the Adult Day Program at Village by the Station and lastly, the compassionate care at Trinity Care Centre.
A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Penticton on Thursday, January 4, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. with refreshments to follow.
