Obituary for Mary Ellen Rusk
Ellen Rusk of The Pas Manitoba, passed away peacefully with her cat and family by her side on Saturday, November 4th 2017, at the home of Gwen and Ken Bartram (daughter and son-in-law) where she was being cared for in her final weeks, in The Pas Manitoba, at the age of 85 years.
Ellen was born Tuesday, January 26th, 1932 at Glenavon Saskatchewan.
Ellen attended school in Regina starting in 1939 and soon after moved to a homestead with her family to Erwood, Saskatchewan and a few years later to Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan. She later moved to Flin Flon, Manitoba, where she met the love of her life, David Thomas Rusk.
Ellen was united in marriage to David Thomas Rusk on June 16th, 1951 at Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan. Ellen and David lived in Flin Flon while Dave worked at Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company. In Flin Flon they welcomed their children Pat, Ivan, Gwen, Kenneth and David. Unfortunately their son Ivan passed away in Flin Flon as an infant.
The family moved to The Pas onto a farm West of town in Carrot Valley in 1961. On the farm Ellen raised her children and cared for the farm animals for the first few years while Dave commuted and continued to work at the mine in Flin Flon. Later he was able to find work in The Pas at Western Grocers and the Papermill. She worked very hard on the farm raising cattle, pigs, chickens and turkeys. Ellen began working at Keewatin Community College in the Housekeeping department in 1977 and retired from there the year that her husband Dave passed away in 1992.
While Ellen lived on the farm she took great pride in taking care of her yard and large flower beds. Ellen enjoyed crocheting dolls, doilies and baby sweaters which she sold and donated to the United Church. When she moved to town she liked to have her bird feeders full, had lunch on the stove for grandchildren and kept the ravens on Patrick Street well fed each morning.
Ellen is survived by her children, Pat (Jim) Porteous of Denare Beach SK, Gwen (Ken) Bartram of The Pas, Kenneth (Diane) Rusk of The Pas, David Rusk Jr of The Pas; grandchildren Donna, Lisa, Richard, Suzanne, Ronnie, Penny, Brad, Jamie, Brittany, Emma Leigh, Devyn, Alex, Joey, Michael, Kristopher, Meghan and David Jr., numerous great and great grandchildren; brother David and sister-in-law Verna (Regina SK), brother Clayton and sister-in-law Sharon (Regina SK), and brother Phillip and sister-in-law Ruth (Regina SK).
Ellen was predeceased by her parents Albert and Birdie Yeo; her husband David; son Ivan; brothers Warren and Albert; and her only sister Viola.
A private family graveside service will be held.
