Margaret Walker Maiden Thomas of St. Albert Aug 18 1945 Nov 19 2017

The light of our lives slipped away last Sunday and our lives will never be the same.
Peggy is survived by her husband, George Walker, children Lori (Gary Sorenson), Robyn
(Darren Hogan), John (Angela), and Sara (Scott Laurie) as well as her sister Sandy (Mark
Gunderson). Peggy was predeceased by her mother and father, Margaret and George
Thomas and her sisters, Georgina (Eric Smith) and Barbara. Her most cherished treasures
were her grandchildren; Matthew Sorenson, Dean and Rachelle Hogan, Landon,
Campbell and Amelia Walker and Fiona and Thomas Laurie will miss her as much as she
misses them.
Throughout her life, Peggy was a caregiver of extraordinary strength and compassion.
Before beginning her life and family with George, Peggy nursed in the Northwest
Territories. Those years were formative, and fifty years later Peggy would still recall with
fondness the friends and adventures from that period. Peg’s aptitude as a healer came
naturally; the devotion, grace and love she gently showed her family were an inspiration
to us all. To not mention the special care she provided for her sister Georgina, mother
Margaret and husband George would be remiss, but in truth she was the rock upon which
we all depended.
Island Lake and Maui both held a special place in Peggy’s heart. At the cabin, quietly
watching over crowded tables overflowing with wonderful meals is where Mom will be
best remembered; many know the cabin as a place of joy, peacefulness and comfort, as
Peggy and George gladly opened their hearts and home to all. She loved nothing better
than to watch the kids on the beach from her carefully tended rock garden, and her dream
was that the third generation of her family would continue to use the cabin to build
wonderful summer memories – we will make that happen for her. Shortly after her first
grandchildren were born Peggy traveled to Maui, a place she had dreamed of visiting for
years. Thus began an annual sojourn that provides endless memories of places beautiful
and family content. Mom, mornings on the beach will not be the same without you, and
will forever conjure treasured memories.
Nothing mattered more to Peggy than family and friends. She and George steered their
four children through the world with unwavering love, support and a value system that
engendered integrity, confidence, humanity, and their same selfless loyalty and reverence
for loved ones. When Peggy became a grandmother she softly and with unsurpassable
joy nurtured her growing flock – providing a second home filled with toys, cookies and
cozy beds for sleepovers. A special remembrance also for her faithful canine companions,
Jake and Judy. In Peg these gentle creatures recognized a kindred spirit. In testament to
her generosity, it’s not possible to mention all whom Peggy touched, but the family
would like to acknowledge the kinship she shared with the members of her bridge club –
both past and present – beautiful ladies and friends for whom Mom cared deeply.
Peggy lived her life without regret, and she died fully contented. A celebration of Peggy’s
life will be held when winter has passed. Mom’s courage never wavered, and she and the
family wish to thank those who were prepared to help her in her coming struggle: the
nurses and staff at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and Cross Cancer Institute, and in
particular Drs. Ken Stewart, Brock Debenham and Michael Smylie.
The Family requests that in lieu of flowers donation be made to the Alberta Cancer
Foundation or the Edmonton SPCA.
