Jessie Logan Barclay Welsh (nee Anderson) passed away peacefully on October 27, 2016 in Lacombe, Alberta at the age of 80 years, after an extended illness. Jess was born on November 06, 1935 to her beloved parents, Helen & John Anderson in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
Her childhood, though challenged by World War II, was a happy one. She enjoyed dancing, going to the pictures, and many other social activities with friends and family.
She always counted herself among the lucky ones that her father’s occupation meant he didn’t go off to war with so many other men in his generation.
Jess adored her parents and never missed a week writing to her mother when she moved away from her childhood home.
She first met her husband, James (Jim) at the local badminton club and they struck up a conversation on a bus trip shortly afterwards – and were together from then onward. Married on September 17, 1958 in St, John’s Church in Hamilton, they moved to England to follow Jim’s career. Both excited to see the world, they undertook the grand adventure of moving to Canada in 1969. Their sense of adventure took them across Canada in the early days of the oil boom in Fort McMurray where they made many lifelong friends. Always anxious to see more of the world, Jess was happy to travel and live with Jim in many parts of the globe including Libya, South Korea, various parts of the USA, Ontario and finally back to Alberta. Their 25th anniversary was marked by an amazing trip around Japan and the Hong Kong area. They finally settled in Lacombe, Alberta where Jim eventually retired.
Jess was always very proud of having won the Anderson Medal for Shorthand, an award established by her grandfather. She enjoyed working in the Town Clerk’s office in Hamilton before starting a family and later, loved to tell her stories of her jobs at the Skyline Hotel, the Leeds & Grenville County Board of Education, the Alberta Treasury Branch, the Douglas Point Nuclear Generation Station, and most especially, working for Dr. Rivers in his medical practice in Fort McMurray.
Jess had a great eye for colour and style and enjoyed decorating her house, lovingly displaying her many collectibles, and appreciating and learning about jewelry. Her house featured numerous pictures of her children, grandchildren and her great grandson.
Lovingly remembered by her loving husband Jim, her two daughters, Karen Stringfellow and Shona (John Penton) Welsh; her four grandchildren Ashley (Drew) Zimlich, Jillian Stringfellow, Ryan Sekulic and Kate Penton-Welsh; her great grandson Dylan Hurley; sister Helen (Jim) Laird, sister in law Beth Anderson; four nieces and numerous other friends and relatives. She was predeceased by her brother Allan Anderson.
