Jean Kuzminski
After threatening to do so for nearly a decade, Baba passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 6th, 2017. She simply went to sleep, and was called to her eternal home where we’re sure she happily reconnected with the many people she has had to say goodbye to throughout her 99 years.
Jean was born Janina Komadowska in Belzec, Poland in 1918. The family immigrated to Canada in 1928, when Jean was 10 years old, a journey she described as “long and boring”. As the oldest daughter of seven children, she proudly took on a maternal role with her youngest siblings, and always had a special place in her heart for her three youngest brothers who she helped raise.
Jean was lucky to find love not once, but twice. After marrying the love of her life, Walter Lefko in 1942, they had two beautiful sons and settled in East Selkirk, MB. After Walter passed away in 1964, Jean found love again and married John Kuzminski in 1967 where they lived happily on their farm until John passed in 1991.
Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-granddaughter were her pride and joy. She would proudly show them off to all the nursing staff and remind them all continuously how much Baba loved them. She was also fiercely protective of them, and combined with her brutally honest and stubborn nature, made her a force to be reckoned with. She is also remembered as having a very bossy personality, something many of her descendants inherited from her. She had famously picked out her “funeral outfit” years ago, insisting that it be the outfit she be buried in, so she could look good when she met Jaja again.
Jean said goodbye to many close family and friends throughout her 99 years. She was most notably predeceased by her husband Walter in 1964, and second husband John in 1991, as well as a daughter, Katherine Laura in 1943. She was also predeceased by her parents, Albert and Anna Komadowski; brothers Michael (Kaye), Frank (Gaye), and Kasmir (Ann) Komadowski, sister Sophie (Anton) Schumilak; daughter-in-law Linda Lefko; sisters-in-law Marge and June Komadowski, and son Jimmy Kuzminski.
She leaves behind to mourn sons Lawrence (Shirley) Lefko, and Clarence Lefko; grandchildren Donna (MJ) Hutton, Glen (Kim) Lefko, Doug (Michelle) Lefko, Darryl Lefko, and Delayna (Jack) Chester; great-grandchildren Danielle, Kailey (Kere), Alexandra (Peter), Joshua, Jordan, Zachary, Brett, and Cristian; great-great-granddaughter Elizabeth; brothers Joe and Johnny Komadowski; step-sons Lloyd (Denise) and Johnny (Doreen) Kuzminski; step-daughter Verna; stepdaughter-in-law Sharon Kuzminski; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Jean was a devout Catholic, and according with her wishes, Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. (viewing at 10:30 a.m.) at St. Stanislaus Church in East Selkirk on Monday, April 10th, 2017. Interment will follow in the East Selkirk Cemetery.
