Howell (Howie) Morgan Powell was born to Jenkin Powell and Isabelle Powell on January 23, 1933 in Abbey, Saskatchewan. Howie passed away peacefully at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan with family by his side on May 23, 2017. Howie was survived by wife Barbara; sons Morgan (Fay), Jeffrey (Cathy), and Evan (Jackie); grandchildren Shayne (Vickie), Chandler (Maryam), Jeffrey (Justine), Kelsey, and Tiffany; great grandchildren Boston, Dylan, Isabelle, Jace, Jemma, and Coen; sister Kathleen (Ed); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws. Howie was predeceased by his parents and parents-in-law; by his son Bart; granddaughter Laci-Anne; grandson Austen; siblings Meryl, Fran, Janey, Graham, and Gaylynne. Howie was raised on the family farm North of Abbey where he spent his time working in the fields and with cattle alongside his father. He grew a dislike for the maintenance surrounding the many rows of trees that his father planted, although admired their appearance. Howie attended Wayne Valley School, Swift Current Collegiate, and the University of Saskatchewan where he received a diploma in Vocational Agriculture in 1952. Shortly after graduation, he started farming. In 1954, he met his wife, Barbara, and were united in a marriage in 1956 that lasted 61 years. As his four sons grew up, he taught them the many values of work on the family farm, and welcomed the visits of his grandchildren. The farm remains in the family today. In 1958 Howie was one of three original founding members of the Abbey Lancer 4-H Beef Club, where he remained a leader for ten years. Howie was a member of the Town Council of Lancer and Mayor, Lancer Credit Union Board, a member of the Lemsford Park Board and a life member of the Knights of Columbus holding executive positions in Lancer. In addition, Howie assisted in the longstanding preparation and delivery of the Chokecherry Festival. Howie was highly involved in sports and recreational activities such as playing and umping fastball, curling for 25 years with the same team winning many trophies and prizes, as well as watching and supporting hockey, curling, baseball, hunting, fishing, horseshoes, dancing, and playing a variety of card games. Enjoying the company that Coffee Row had to offer, both in Lancer and in Swift Current. Howie and Barbara would enjoy the warm winter weather in Mesa, Arizona. Howie enjoyed being surrounded by family and conversation either at family reunions or general gatherings. Howie’s sons will surely miss the post Bronco game coffees with their dad. His contagious smile will be missed by all that knew him. Howie’s family appreciates the support, love, and prayers being received at this difficult time. The prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 26, 2017 from Christ the Redeemer Roman Catholic Church with Leader of Vigils Kathy Wanner. The memorial mass was held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday May 27, 2017 with Reverend Msgr. Reymundo Asis officiating. The organist was Yolande Gorrill, the Honor Guard was provided by the Knights of Columbus, the urn bearers were his grandchildren, honorary pallbearers were all those who shared in Howie’s life, and ushers were Randy Schwab and Scott Holberd. The readers were Albert Fiset and Pattie Wagner, intentions by Margaret Monk, and gift bearers were Kelsey Powell and Tiffany Powell. Eugolist Brad Hopfauf The interment service took place from Lancer Community Memorial Cemetery with Father Joseph Thazhathemuriyil officiating. Donations in Howie’s memory may be made to the Abbey Lancer 4-H Club or to a charity of your choice. Warren’s Funeral Home were entrusted with the arrangements.
