Giles Hume – 2017

HUME- Giles Alexander, formerly of Springfield, Ontario, passed away peacefully on August 5th, 2017 at Chartwell Nursing Home, Aylmer, Ontario in his 90th year. Giles was born in Cobourg, Ontario on November 7th, 1927 to Thomas and Eva (Martin) Hume. At twenty years of age, Giles and his family moved to the Martin’s dairy farm, west of Springfield, Ontario. Giles often described this move as the turning point in his life. He happily joined the Elgin County Junior Farmers and quickly became involved in the Elgin County 4H Dairy Club, the Aylmer Fair Committee and St. John’s United Church, Springfield. Giles was the Charter President of the Springfield Lions Club and was honoured for his contributions to the community by receiving the Citizen of the Year award in both Springfield and Aylmer. He was a member of 1st Springfield Scouting. Volunteering in the community was Giles’ life passion. Along with being a full time farmer, he owned and operated Giles Hume Insurance in Springfield and as an agent wrote for North and South Dorchester Mutual Fire Insurance and Otter Dorchester Mutual Insurance Company.Giles was predeceased by his loving parents, Tom and Eva Hume and by his cherished siblings, Phyllis Mac Donald and Donald Hume. Giles also was predeceased by his longtime companion, Donna Gray. Friends may call at the H. A. Kebbel Funeral Home, Aylmer on Wednesday 7-9 p.m. where the funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 10, 2017 at 11 am. Interment, Aylmer Cemetery.
