It is with great sadness that the family of George Joseph Fonso, age 91 years, announces his passing at the TBRHSC on Monday, October 10, 2016.
George was born June 25, 1925 to the late Antonio and Josephine Fonso. He was employed at the Provincial Paper Mill at the age of 19 and retired after 44 years of service. While working, George played baseball for Provincial Paper Mill League as pitcher. George married Irene Brown on January 30, 1944 and they had 54 years together until her passing on March 2, 1998. Together they raised two children.
Once George retired, he could be seen every morning at Grandview Mall – walking for exercise while whistling or humming a tune, purchasing his lottery tickets or checking if he was a big winner, or getting some groceries. He was such a familiar face at the Mall that people thought he was employed there.
George will be lovingly remembered by daughter Sharon (Brian) Mallon, son Doug, and two grandchildren Sheri (Chris) Lobbecke and Rob Mallon (Janet). He is also survived by his sister Phyllis Stokaluk, and sisters-in-law Verna Fonso from Winnipeg, Betty Kahler and Linda Lake as well as several nieces and nephews.
George was predeceased by his wife Irene and his Great Granddaughter Kayley Lobbecke, parents Antonio and Josephine Fonso, brothers Carlo and Tony Cappello, Frank, Louie and Bert Fonso, sisters Anne Wanzuk and Edith Schroeder and several other family members.
In accordance with George’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at Our Lady of Loretto R.C. Church, 290 Grenville Avenue celebrated by Rev. Francis Pudicherry. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Our Lady of Loretto Elevator Fund or to the Charity of your Choice would be greatly appreciated by the family. Online condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com
George will be sadly missed, but lovingly remembered by his family and friends.
We will listen for his whistling coming from above!
