Ernest John Holmstrom – 1918-2017

Ernest John Holmstrom
1918-2017
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of a
cherished dad and grandpa, Ernest John Holmstrom, 98, of Forest Dale
Home. He passed away peacefully on June 30th, 2017 at the
home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Basswood, MB on November 17th, 1918 the son
of the late George and Hilma (Erickson) Holmstrom.
He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and was a mechanic
in Scoudouc where he met the love of his life, Kathleen.
Ernest had a farm in Hopewell Hill and loved everything
about farming. He loved being outdoors and in
nature. He also had a passion for gardening. He
moved to Burnaby BC in 1970 and became a welder, it was very rare for
a man his age to receive all 5 tickets of welding which he did through
Burnaby Tech. He enjoyed reading and music, especially
opera. Ernest lived with his son Stephen and Elaine for seven years,
before making his home at Forest Dale Home. In the last little while
he had grown very fond of Bingo which he would play with the other
residents. Ernest felt blessed to be able to have his
family around him was grateful to his son Stephen who took him in
after his health deteriorated. When he had to go to Forest
Dale Home he looked forward to his daily visits from his
family. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor
and that little smirk. He loved sharing stories of the old
days and his legacy will live on in the hearts of his loved ones
forever.
He will be deeply missed by his sons, Stephen (Elaine) of
Hopewell Hill, Michael (Gerri) of Langley, BC, Brian (Joyce) of
Edmonton, AB and Patrick of North Vancover, BC; his daughters, Karen
Holmstrom of Hopewell Hill, Linda Martin (late Henry) of Lower
Coverdale and Ellen Jacobson (Arne) of Turtle Lake, SK; his treasured
12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; his brother Sir Gordon
Holmstrom of Brandon, MB and sisters, Hilda Carlson of Erickson, MB
and Verna Crux of Brandon, MB. He will also be missed by
several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his beloved wife,
Kathleen Calhoun (Harper) Holmstrom; infant daughter, Patricia Susan
and sister Margaret.
Honoring Ernest’s own wishes there will be no visitation or
funeral service. A private Family graveside service will be
held in the Hopewell Cemetery, Hopewell Hill, NB at a later
date.
For those who wish donations to the Salvation Army or the
Forest Dale Home Foundation would be greatly
appreciated.
Arrangements are in the care of the Albert County Funeral
Home, 4130 Route 114, Hopewell Cape, NB, E4H-3K2 (506)-734-2780
