Obituary
Ella May Gabert
September 20, 1925 – April 9, 2017
Ella May Gabert of Rosemary, beloved wife of E.H. (Buck) Gabert, passed away at Bassano Health Centre on April 9, 2017 at the age of 91 years. Ella, the youngest of four, was born to Gertrude (Hicock) and William Mustard September 20, 1925 in Barons, Alberta. Ella spoke of the depression years when she would often go hungry. Her mother was a school and Sunday school teacher. As a child, Ella recalled walking to the church to help her Mom start the fire to heat the church building. While attending school, Ella enjoyed running races. She liked art but was also good with numbers. She owned a pet cat, Fluffy, and later Ella ensured that her own children enjoyed having a pet cat or dog. The family lived in Cluny and then Calgary. Ella was employed as a bank clerk, and then at a Kresge’s store. In 1944 she attended a staff party/dance where she met Pilot Officer Buck Gabert. On June 28, 1946 they were married. The couple moved to Rainier, where Buck taught school and they started their family. Throughout the years, Ella remained a full time homemaker and mother. In 1949, they moved to Rosemary where they raised three children: Larry, Donna, and Linda. With her family, Ella enjoyed picking berries, hunting, fishing, tenting, gardening, biking, hiking and cross-country skiing. She loved to dance, especially waltzes and polkas. When Buck curled, Ella was there, with cheers and home-made pies. When the kids participated in basketball and track and field, Ella was their greatest fan. After Buck retired in 1980, they continued tenting and then trailering throughout Alberta, BC, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Alaska, visiting family and friends and finding all the fishing holes. Ella was an avid Edmonton Oilers fan, particularly during the Wayne Gretzky era, and was a long-time fan of the Edmonton Eskimos. Ella’s greatest love was supporting her husband, raising her family, and keeping the household running smoothly! She enjoyed drawing, crocheting, sewing, cake decorating, and took pottery classes. She was a superb creator of pies, cakes, buns, cinnamon rolls, Swedish Tea rings, and fruit cakes. Her musical interests included singing, listening to the “Old Timers” on CFRN radio, and playing the harmonica. She also spent time reading; playing board games and doing jigsaw puzzles with her family. For a time, Ella was president of the Rosemary School Band, secretary-treasurer of the Rosemary Ladies Club, and was involved with the Home and School Association. Faith in Jesus Christ was a vital part of Ella’s life. She and her family attended the Lutheran Church where the children went to Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. Ella taught her children the importance of prayer. She loved old hymns and spent time reading devotionals and Bible passages – her favourite of which was Psalm 23, which she memorized. Many times the family gathered around the piano for a hymn sing and if they didn’t get to church, it was important to Ella to have the family sit down to listen to a Christian radio program. Wedding anniversaries were especially significant and as Ella and Buck celebrated their 50th, 60th, 65th, and 70th anniversaries, each felt blessed to still have each other. Ella’s eyes always sparkled when Buck entered the room. She had the most wonderful smile. It was obvious that they were still very much in love. Ella spent the last 3 years at the Bassano Health Centre Continuing Care, and visited her home in Rosemary as frequently as possible. Thanks to the staff for their caring. Left to mourn her passing are her beloved husband E.H. (Buck) Gabert; her three loving children: Larry (Pam), Donna, and Linda (Vern-deceased) Caston; two granddaughters, Sarah Considine; and Julie (Tyler) Dinsdale and their three sons, Logan, Eli, and Garnet; sister, Doris Reilly of Okotoks, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her dear mother, Gertrude; father, William; brother, Arnold (Edna) Mustard; sister, Gladys (Ronald) Clark; nephews, Jim Reilly and Ken Clark; nieces, Bev Mitchell and Shirley Clark. A memorial service celebrating Ella’s life will be held at Thom’s Funeral Home in Duchess, Alberta on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Frank Krulicki officiating. If friends desire, memorial tributes may be made to the Salvation Army. 9618 – 101a Ave NW Edmonton, AB T5H 0C7 www.salvationarmy.ca/alberta Phone; 780 412-2741.
