GREENWOOD, Elaine Florence
December 3, 1923 – December 10, 2017
It is with great sadness the family of Elaine Greenwood (Nee Monks) announce her passing December 10,2017 in Evansburg at the age of 94. The youngest of six, Elaine was born in Lachine, Quebec on December 3rd, 1923. March 10th, 1944, Elaine married Edward Greenwood, an Officer in the RCAF, of Park Court Alberta. At the end of WW II, they moved west to start their own farm in Park Court. It must have been quite a shock on the first trip west. Elaine, born and raised in Lachine, a suburb of Montreal and had always had Electricity, sewer, running water and paved streets and street cars. Upon arrival in Evansburg she was greeted by the relentless, spring mud, a town with a wooden sidewalk down one side of the street and a long (12 mile) horse and buggy ride to Edward’s parents farm. Amenities were, coal oil lamps, “outdoor” plumbing, water in pails and dirt roads.
Elaine was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Edward Greenwood in 1994 and her parents, William and Maryann Monks, siblings Bill, Ann, Ken, Des, and Muriel.
She is survived by her four children, Gilbert (Linda), Fran (Andy Chopko), Gail (Keith Lorenz), Bruce (Colleen Midtdal). Nine Grandchildren, Edward (Melody) Greenwood, Darren (Debbie) Greenwood, Heather (Clint Butler), Dennis (Renee) Chopko, Erin (Paul Burrell), Lindsay (Adam Thompson), Sara Lorenz (Nick Maycher), Jessica Greenwood (Derek Schadeck), Megan Greenwood (Devon Anderson). Ten Great Grandchildren, Eric, Jake and Ryan Greenwood, Edyn and Bryn Greenwood, Declan Butler, Duke and Drey Chopko, Bastien and Theo Burrell.
A memorial celebration of Elaine’s life will be held Monday, December 18, at 2:00 PM at the Evansburg Legion Hall. The family would like to sincerely thank all of the staff at the Evergreen Lodge and the Pembina Lodge for the phenomenal care and support of our Mom. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to “The Good Samaritan Society, Box 330, Evansburg, Ab, T0E0T0. Donations go toward the recreational and entertainment program for all of the Lodge Residents.
