Dr. Knut Vik

Dr. Knut Vik – 2016

Obituary Born in Camrose, Alberta, Knut practised medicine in Edmonton from 1962 and he touched many lives. Along with a west-end family practice, he practised surgery and obstetrics at the Edmonton General Hospital, worked with elderly patients in extended care, was one of the first physicians to treat HIV/AIDS patients, conducted breast clinics at the Cross Cancer Institute, specialized in addictions treatment, and was involved in early efforts to introduce palliative care in Alberta. Knut served for twelve years as Chair of the Fatality Review Board of Alberta and later served for over a decade on Mental Health Review Panels. Throughout his life, Knut inspired others through his accomplishments and his passions. He was an accomplished pianist at an early age but ultimately chose a career in medicine, graduating top of his class in 1957 at the University of Alberta, followed by surgical residencies in Edmonton and Philadelphia. His passion for the arts, especially opera and piano, influenced many others and he served on the boards of the Edmonton Opera, Alberta Ballet, Edmonton Art Gallery and Theatre Network. He founded the Vik Gallery on 104th Street where he was proud to represent such artists as Joane Cardinal-Shubert, Jane Ash Poitras and Jim Davies. Knut was an athlete, an avid skier from early childhood and in his seventies could still be seen in the river valley passing bicyclists on his roller blades. He travelled many times in India, Africa, Europe and South America. He was proud of his Norwegian heritage and loved his times in Oslo. He was a linguist with a proficiency in Norwegian and studied French, Italian and Hindi. Knut leaves his partner and best friend Frank, his sister-in-law Mona, niece Sharon (Rick) and nephew Randall (Karen). He was pre-deceased by his parents, Judith and Isak, and brother Per. In recent years, Knut resisted the incursions of dementia but ultimately these were compounded by strokes and seizures. Special appreciation goes to staff of 7A/B at the Edmonton General, who helped make Knut’s life rewarding these past sixteen months. Knut supported many causes. Two closest to his heart were opera and animal protection and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Edmonton Opera or the Edmonton Humane Society. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at Connelly-McKinley, 10011 – 114 Street, Edmonton.
