On Friday October 7, 2016 with his family by his side, our beloved Dad, Grandfather and Great Grandfather went to be with his Lord and Saviour at the St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 83 years.
Dad was born on June 30, 1933 at Blumenfeld, MB to Diedrich & Margaret Klassen. Dad was baptized upon the confession of His faith in 1957 in the Blumenfeld Old Colony Church by Bishop Jacob Froese. At the age of 19, Dad went to Burns Lake, BC to work in a lumber camp. While there he got a ricochet bullet in his chest that went into one of his lungs. He spent many months in the hospital recovering. Dad spent many years hauling gravel. On October 27, 1957 Dad married the love of his life Mary Kehler. Many moves followed while hauling gravel. Their 1st daughter Marge was born during this time. On October 18, 1963 they moved to Austin where they bought a small farm. The next year their 2nd daughter Susan was born and 3 ½ years later their son Jake was born. Due to Dads failing health they moved into Austin in June of 1997. Dad enjoyed living in town. He did not have to worry if it was going to rain when it was haying or combining time.
On May 24th Dad was admitted to Portage hospital with a blockage in his intestines. This kept reoccurring. On August 3rd he was sent to St. Boniface. On August 10th he had surgery. August 22nd he came back to Portage Hospital. A few days later the 5th blockage occurred. Towards the end of September he was doing very well and thought he would be moving to Victoria Place in Macgregor. Then on September 28th he had another blockage. His health deteriorated fast after that. On October 6th he was transported to St. Boniface Hospital. In the early morning hours of October 7th he was put on life support, to try and determine what the problem was. After surgeons explained the situation, we decided letting him go was the best decision. At 6:31pm he took his last breath.
He was predeceased by his wife Mary on May 26, 2010, sister Margaret, brother Jacob, brothers in law Bill Fehr and Henry Penner and sister in law Ida Klassen.
He is survived by daughter Marge (Jake) Wiebe: their children Glen, great grandchildren Curtis, Mikayla, Ethan, Liam & Ivan; Kevin (Amanda) great grandchildren Faith & Jordan; daughter Susan (Dan): their children Lily; Melinda (Justin) Delorme, great grandchildren, Emily & Jonah; Rick; son Jake, grandchildren Larrissa, Jolene, Dallas, Dawson and Rebecca.
Dad is also survived by 2 sisters, Susan & Tina and 1 brother George, sister in law Katherine Klassen and brother in law John Schmidt, many nieces and nephews as well as Mom’s siblings and extended family.
The family would like to thanks everyone for their prayers and visits. Thank you to Drs & staff at Portage & St. Boniface hospital for all the care given to Dad. Thank you to Bob & staff at Clarkes Funeral Home for their help and compassionate care.
Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at 2:00 PM at the MacGregor Sommerfeld Mennonite Church with Reverend Larry Kehler and Deacon Peter Friesen officiating. Interment to follow at Sommerfeld Cemetery in Austin.
