With great sadness, we announce that Ced passed away peacefully in Victoria, BC, October 11, 2017, surrounded by his family. Born August 13, 1948, in Ladysmith, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, to Gordon Leonard and Frances Mabel Anthonisen. Predeceased by his parents; sister Carol and brother-in-law John Armitage. Survived by his loving family: sisters Denise Armitage and Pamela Bates (Gordon); former wife Debra Grand (Bob); sons Roy (Chin), Brent & Brian; grandchildren Dena, Roan & Trevor (their mother Cecille); nephews, Chris Dorrington (Elizabeth) & Glynn Bates (Melissa); niece, Cherish Dorrington (Craig Lawrence), Jennifer Bates ; grand nieces and nephews, Tiffany (Ian Beliveau), Danielle & Jennifer (Ryan Vallee), Kelty & Karl, Selena, Emilie & Tristan; great grand nieces and nephews, Riley, Ella, Marek, Ronin & Luka; relations all over the world, and special friend Chris Thomas.
Immigrating from SA to Canada in 1955, Ced lived in Peterborough with his family, adapting easily to cold snowy winters, a backyard skating rink, and shovelling snow! The family moved to Victoria in 1959. Right from his first newspaper route as a young boy, after high school (Vic High), he was keen to tackle work and do his best. Gardening was a joy, and being the family’s ‘green thumb’, Ced grew beautiful roses, a variety of vegetables, and 2 majestic Sequoia trees. Ced was a generous, kind and gentle soul, who gave so much of himself to others, offering not just “his shirt” but his coat, once given to a stranger in the hospital bed beside his. Ced lived with his ailments without complaint. He was a very private person, a thinker. Ced was also witty, making us laugh often, and enjoyed radio talk shows. A devoted “hockey dad”, who took all 3 sons to practices and games in their early years and was proud of their accomplishments. A devoted, kind son, Ced gave his parents much of his time and attention in their dotage.
We will miss Ced. He gave so much of himself to others and will remain always in our hearts.
In keeping with his quiet nature, a Private Family Gathering will be held to honour Cedric.
Thank you to the doctors and nurses for Cedric’s care in the ICU at VGH, during his last short stay. If so desired, donations to the BCSPCA Wild ARC sca.bc.ca/locations/wild-arcp or to a charity of your choice in memory of Cedric, would be appreciated.
