With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of William “Billy” DeGruchy, who left this world on May 14, 2025, at home, surrounded by the love of his devoted family.
Born on February 26, 1938, in the community of Havre Boucher, Nova Scotia, Billy was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend.
His life was a beautiful tapestry of love, dedication, and quiet strength.
For 61 wonderful years, Billy shared a life of unwavering love and companionship with his cherished wife, Madeleine. Together, they built a family grounded in kindness, resilience, and mutual respect. He was a proud and loving father to three children: Sheila (Tahira), the late and profoundly missed Dennis (Leanne) and Dean (Catherine). His legacy lives on in the lives of his three grandsons (Logan, Jacob and Luke) and three great-grandchildren (Lily, Izzy & Lincoln) who brought him immense joy and pride.
Besides his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and those listed above, left to mourn are his Brother Andrew (Barbara), Brother-In law Pat DeCoste (Marie), Chrystal DeCoste, Sister-in law Darlene, Sister-in-law Angela and many nieces, nephews.
Billy was pre-deceased by parents Mary (Fougère) and Allan DeGruchy, son Dennis, Sister Marie, Brothers Alexander (Elizabeth), Peter, Edward (Colleen), Nephews of brother Alexander (Elizabeth); Joseph, James, Gerard and Micheal and recently Gerard (of Andrew and Barbara), Sister in law Mary Theresa DeCoste and Brother-in -Law Carl A. DeCoste.
Billy devoted his working years to the land and his community. As a beef cattle farmer, Woodsman and school bus driver, he exemplified hard work, patience, and humility. His hands shaped the earth and safely guided generations of children—a testament to his nurturing spirit and deep sense of responsibility.
Outside of work, Billy found solace in the simple pleasures of life. Whether tending to his garden or casting a fishing line, he embraced nature with a peaceful heart and often shared these quiet moments with loved ones. His calm demeanor, soft-spoken wisdom, and steady presence were a comfort to all who knew him.
Billy will be remembered not only for what he did but for who he was—a gentle soul, a pillar of support, and a man whose love was felt in his every action. His memory will forever live in the hearts of his family and friends.
The family would like to acknowledge the care and kindness of Antigonish palliative care; Dr. Che and Valerie Pettipas (RN), the VON nursing team, Red Cross and Family 1st Medical (Dawn)
