MacMillan, Wendy E.,
70, of Lower South River, Antigonish County, passed away on Thursday,
March 27, 2025, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital,
Antigonish, surrounded by her
family.
Born in Sault Ste
Marie, Ontario, she was a daughter of the late Jim and Arlie (Pine)
McMillan.
She is survived by
her husband of 52 years Gord; daughter Shawna, Lower South River; son
Shane (Martha), Ottawa; grandchildren Everly and Marilla; siblings;
Brenda, Daryl, June, Dwight, and Leeann; many nieces and nephews; and
her favorite little bakers Sophie, Kaiden, and
Kyleigh.
Besides her parents
she is predeceased by siblings, Jack, Kevin, and
Darlene.
She first noticed
the love of her life at the outdoor skating rink in Echo Bay , where
she leaned over to her best friend Karen and said, « I’m going to
marry him », to which Karen said, « How? You don’t
even know who he is! » After
marrying this stranger, she and Gord moved down to Nova Scotia where
she created a large community of amazing, supportive friends whom she
loved dearly.
Wendy’s
greatest joy came from her baking for her family and
friends. Especially
on Saturday nights when she would be listening to her country music
and occasionally call Gord in for a quick dance in the kitchen while
she was baking.
Wendy loved to bake
and was especially known for her fruitcakes. This past
holiday, Wendy was quite ill from her own treatments at the same time
as her brother Jack’s health was failing. When
asked what she could do for him, he asked for one more
fruitcake. Wendy pushed through her sickness and
produced one more batch of Christmas fruitcakes, granting
Jack’s dying wish. He was
delighted. Wendy was also over the moon to learn
that one of her cakes from that batch travelled with a family friend
all the way to Africa where it was shared among her family and friends
over the holidays.
The family would
like to express their gratitude to Dr. Bently, Dr. Barron, and all the
staff in the Chemotherapy Department and third floor at St.
Martha’s.
Cremation has taken
place. A private family celebration of life will
take place at a later date, both in Antigonish and Sault St. Marie.
In Memoriam, donations may be made to St.
Martha’s Regional Hospital Foundation (Palliative Care
Unit).
