Wayne Currie Obituary
Wayne Currie
Peacefully in hospital on December 20 2024 in his 86’th year due to the effects of dementia. Wayne was the cherished husband of Lise (nee Menard) for over 62 years; and over the course of their marriage they travelled through Europe and Canada and danced their way through Military Mess dinners, parties, weddings and anniversaries. He was father to Barb O’brien (John) and Steven (Erica, nee McEwen), grandfather to Tyler (Amber), Brandon, Jessica (Katelyn) and Jordan (Ashley nee Lawrence) and great-grandfather to Maddox, Rowan, Royce, Gracie and Cohen. Brother to Nancy Macdow and predeceased by brothers Eric and Allen. An avid hockey fan, he loved his Habs for decades, but recent years saw his allegiance switch to the Senators, often not even knowing the score of the Montreal game if Ottawa played the same night. He was a loyal hockey Papa and rarely missed a game Jess or Jordan player over 20 years. He himself played the game until he was 83 yrs old, most recently in Almonte and enjoyed coffee and companionship at the Legion Branch 240 afterwards with his teammates. The feat of playing hockey past the age of 80 has given him the honour of having his name in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Wayne also enjoyed golf, DIY projects (with varying results) and was always on the move. Outgoing and at ease with anyone he met, the maritimer in him had him chatting within minutes of sitting beside someone at a hockey game or in line at the grocery store. He never met a Chinese buffet he didn’t like, and enjoyed celebrating family birthdays at Tucker’s Marketplace downtown Ottawa. He and Lise spent summers for several years at their trailer at Lake Dore in Eganville, where he loved taking his pontoon boat out with the great-grandkids, though his DIY solutions for things there had his son in law, also with a trailer there-shaking his head. He had a motorcycle for many years, and he would participate in fundraising efforts like “Ride for Dad” rides, often with granddaughter Jess on the back of the bike. Originally from Nova Scotia, his heart was never far from there. Wayne served in the Military for over 35 years, joining at 18 and medically retiring as a Warrant Officer in 1991. He then worked as a Commissionaire until he was 80-finally retiring to Carleton Place. Even then he couldn’t sit still- visiting Shoppers Drug Mart, the grocery stores or Walmart at least once a day. His legacy and being remembered was important to him, and he gave each grandchild a special package many years ago, not to be opened until 2035. A mystery until then. But we cannot and will not forget the goofy and quirky Wayne, who loved his family. We would like to thank the Carleton Place Hospital (particularly James) and Bayshore Home Health Care- especially Mike, Hailey and Lauren for their care. Thank you for the laughs and memories, rest easy now.
