Morton, Waneta – passed away peacefully on January 19, 2025 at the age of 95 in Willow Lodge, Tatamagouche.
She was predeceased by her husband, James Russell Morton; mother, Dorothy Alberta (Crossley) Lake; father, Sherman Delbert Lake; brothers, Nolan Glen (Faye), Gerald Roade (Helen); and sisters, Glenda Naomi Hill (Clifford), Mercia Alberta Deal (Albert) and Marilyn June Wile (Everett).
She is survived by her children, Judy Doucet (Ron), Geraldine Hemeon (John), Kevin (Janette), Corinne Carter (Derek), Leah MacDonald (Scott), Alan (Patti), Lester (Diane); and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Waneta was born in Bramber, NS in a beautiful house at the end of the road now known as Sherman Lake Road, overlooking the Bay of Fundy. They had a large farm, and her father had built a large log building on the property where community dances were held regularly. Every year on July 1st, there was a grand celebration with food and dance.
A fire destroyed the family home (they suspected it was caused by a spark in the upstairs chimney). Her older sister, Mercia went upstairs and threw whatever she could salvage out the window. The family then moved to the log building on the property and made it their home. When the boys went off to the War, her father sold the large farm and moved them to a smaller property on the main road in Bramber. She lived there until she was fifteen. As there were not any teachers that would stay and teach, she went to work.
She first worked at the Windsor Hospital. When she moved to Truro, she worked at the Truro Hospital, where she had various duties and worked in the OR when needed. She also worked at the Hat Factory and Stanfield’s as a seamstress. In 1949, she worked as a cook at a camp owned by Harlen Nelson in Pleasant Valley and later worked at a log cutting camp in Goodwood, NS. She was married January 3, 1949 and moved into a house in Stewiacke East in April 1952 where she resided for 71 years.
Waneta loved music and travelling. She travelled extensively in Eastern Canada and the United States and enjoyed trips to Mexico, St. Lucia, Belize and Caribbean cruises.
At her request, there will be no visitation, funeral or flowers.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.
Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Stewiacke East at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to Pine Grove Cemetery.
