Virgilio Cupido Obituary
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Virgilio Cupido, who left us on Monday, February 17, 2025, at the age of 82 in Calgary. Though he is gone, his adventurous spirit, love of family, and zest for life will remain with all who knew him.
Born on June 4, 1942, in Ortona, Italy, to Rosaria and Giuseppe, Virgilio’s life was nothing short of an incredible journey. At 20, he set sail for the United States, where he lived with his sister Delfina. He was soon drafted into the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia, and played a role in history as part of the squadron sent to Selma, Alabama, during the pivotal civil rights marches of 1965.
Fate had bigger plans for Virgilio. A visit to Calgary to see a friend led him to reconnect with familiar faces from his Italian hometown—the Marzetti’s. Among them was Cecilia, the woman who would become his beloved wife. After a few years in New York, the couple made Calgary their home in 1975, where they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished traditions. Here he trained as a carpenter and after a serious hand injury he worked in sales at Home Depot until his retirement.
Virgilio was a man of many passions. He found joy in gardening, hunting, fishing, and making his own wine—though he was perhaps best known for his deep-sea fishing tales. With boundless enthusiasm, he’d bring back sacks of fresh sole or bluefish from the Massachusetts coast, eager to share his prized catch with friends and family.
A proud member of the Calgary Italian Cultural Centre, Virgilio relished a good game of bocce, but the real fun was in the lively post-game conversations that covered everything from politics to life’s greatest mysteries. He also took great pride in his volunteer work at the CICC fundraising Bingos and his brief involvement with the Knights of Columbus at Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Church.
Travel was another great love, and Virgilio and Cecilia made unforgettable memories exploring the world together. From countless trips back to Italy to a breathtaking hot air balloon ride over the otherworldly landscapes of Cappadocia, Turkey, Virgilio embraced every adventure with open arms.
Above all, Virgilio was a devoted family man. He leaves behind his loving wife of 55 years, Cecilia; his sons, Adrian (Leah) and Mark (Yumi); and his treasured grandchildren, Hikari, Sakura, and Rocco, as well as his in-laws, Milvia and Terry Nazarko and their family. He is also survived by his sisters in Italy—Assunta, Maria, and Delfina (Donato)—and their families. He now reunites with his parents, Giuseppe and Rosaria, and his brother, Vito Antonio, in eternal rest.
Virgilio’s life was rich, full, and well-lived. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unforgettable stories. Though we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the incredible life he led—one filled with adventure, kindness, and a heart big enough to embrace everyone around him.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Catholic Church (1714 14 Ave NE) on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at 11:00 am. Family and Friends are invited to a reception at The Calgary Italian Cultural Centre (416-1st Avenue NE), after the interment at Queen’s Park Mausoleum.
