Virgil Paul Obituary
Virgil Albert Paul
Born August 20th, 1948 – Died January 29th, 2025
It is with great sadness that we have had to say our good-byes to our beloved Virgil Paul at the age of 76. Virgil was a beloved husband to Françoise Paul of 55 years, a loving father to his daughter Renee (Merlin) Koester, and their children Brandon, Tyson, Dillon, Payton (Matt), Kole and their grandchildren Xavier and Xia. He was also a cherished brother-in-law to Juliette (Stephen) Paul, their daughter Rachelle (Roman) Thauern and their grandson Theodore. Virgil is survived by his brothers Roger (Irene), Emile (Valerie), Alphonse (Carol), Julien (Jeanette), Don (Donna) McCrimmon, and his sisters Doris (Amedee) Beaubien, and Beatrice (Reg) Schidlowsky. He is also survived by numerous brother-n-laws, sister-n-laws, nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
Virgil was born in Loon Lake, Saskatchewan on August 20th, 1948, to his parents Delphis and Denise Paul. For the first 6 years of Dad’s young life, his family resided on a farm south of Makwa, Saskatchewan. At 6 his family moved right into the town of Makwa where his father opened a Blacksmith shop. Dad attended the Makwa School until he reached the age of 16. Dad decided to pursue a career as a welder so the decision was made that he would move to Regina, Saskatchewan. At the age of 18, while working in Regina, he began dating the love of his life, Françoise Dionne. Dad and Mom were married in their hometown of Makwa, Saskatchewan on December 27th, 1969. After being in Regina for a while, Dad decided that he would like to attend training to become an autobody mechanic. With great consideration, they moved to Grand Centre, Alberta, where Dad worked in an autobody shop. After a year of living in Grand Centre, Dad and Mom moved to Forestburg, Alberta to further his career and become a journeyman autobody mechanic. They lived in Forestburg for about 4 years. Before Grandma Dionne passed away in the summer of 1973, she asked Dad and Mom to raise Mom’s youngest siblings Juliette and Marcel. Auntie Juliette chose to stay with Dad and Mom while Uncle Marcel decided to go live with Mom’s sister Auntie Andre and her husband Uncle Lyle in Canwood, Saskatchewan. In 1974 they moved back to Makwa, so Dad could open an autobody mechanic shop. To build his autobody shop, Dad along with Grandpa Paul, and my Uncles Harvey, Alphonse, Julien, and Marcel tore down one of Saskatchewan’s first federal grain elevators. They chose to salvage the lumber to build the autobody shop and a few of the family members’ homes. Dad operated Scoria Autobody for approximately 9 years at which time Uncle Armand took it over. In 1974, with the help of Uncle Rene by sponsoring him, Dad joined in the life of sobriety and faithfully continued to do so until his death. In April 1977, Dad and Mom adopted their first child, a baby boy, and named him Leo Delphis. In September of 1978, they also adopted and welcomed a baby girl into their family, they named her Renee Antoinette. In 1987, they turned the autobody shop into a home for their family. Due to a back injury, Dad was no longer able to be an autobody mechanic, so in 1989 he decided to go back to school and become a Drug and Alcohol Counsellor.
Dad worked on the Loon Lake Reserve at the Mistahey Muskwa Treatment Centre until approximately September of 1992. In November of that year, Dad moved our family to Beauval, Saskatchewan to continue working as an addictions counsellor. Dad retired from there at the age of 67 (2015). In 2009, Dad and Mom decided to invest in a Lake Lot up around Ile La Crosse, Saskatchewan. Many holidays up there were enjoyed by all. We worked, played, fished, and enjoyed the lake lot until the summer of 2024. In 2019, they moved back to Makwa, Saskatchewan, and resided there until Dad passed away from stage 4 lung cancer at the Kindersley Hospital in Kindersley, Saskatchewan on January 29th, 2025.
Dad was predeceased by both his parents, Delphis and Denise Paul, his brothers Armand, Rene, and Jerry Paul, his sister Suzanne McCrimmon, his father and mother-n-law Hector and Antoinette Dionne, his brother-n-laws Roland and Marcel Dionne, sister-n-laws Pauline Dionne and Betty Paul, his nephew Jamie Weberg and his niece Nina Schidlowsky.
