In the early morning of Tuesday, January 14th, 2025, after Sheila singing Amazing Grace for what seemed like the millionth time, Violet Elizabeth Talock was reunited with her husband Fred and her daughter Arlene in Heaven. Violet was born on December 3rd, 1928, in Scobey, Montana, and lived her childhood days on a ranch in Scout Lake, SK. She later lived in Regina and then Moose Jaw, SK.
She was predeceased by her parents, Grace and Norman Kirby; stepmother, Gladys Kirby; her loving husband, Fred on December 27th, 1990; daughter, Arlene on April 18th, 2017; son, Barry on November 14th, 2022; brothers: Charles, Clarence “Bob”, James, and Ernest “Dutch”; and infant sister, Margaret Ann. Violet is survived by her beloved family, daughter, Sheila (Brian) Leahy; son-in-law, Kim Richardson; grandchildren: Kimberly (Ashley) Large, Michelle (Duane) Doell, and Amanda Talock; step-grandchildren: Ryan (Jackie) McClelland, Rochelle (Sean) Mulligan, and Dustin Williams; great-grandchildren: Jora, Jack, and Kelser Doell, Ben and Sam Large, Miya and Lexi McClelland, Addison and Emerson Mulligan, and Connor Curtis-Talock; sisters, Grace and Myrtle; brother, Ralph; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Violet was a hard worker, even from an early age. Her mother passed away when she was 14 years old and after that, she took over the cooking duties for her father and hired hands. In her earlier years, Violet worked as a hairdresser, a housekeeper, at Sears Warehouse in Regina, and later was a nurse’s aide at Providence Hospital on the Rapheal Wing in Moose Jaw for several years.
Violet and Fred were married in Minneapolis on August 7th, 1950. Fred worked for the Dominion Government who wanted them to have a Canadian marriage certificate, so they had a second ceremony in Regina by a Justice of the Peace on June 2nd, 1962.
Violet had an abundant garden and loved her flowers, especially her peony bushes. Neighbours would come to her garden for dill to make their pickles, as she always had a huge supply of it. Violet was a wonderful cook and loved having all of her family for Christmas, Easter, or any other occasion, until her health prevented her from doing the cooking. When we were younger, Mom would bake the best cinnamon buns, and we would sit on the kitchen floor watching them bake. We could not wait for them to come out so we could sample them.
Violet enjoyed twelve trips to Hawaii with Fred and a few trips to Vancouver, BC. She was not a sun worshiper as Fred was, but she would still go on trips and enjoyed their time together. She would never step out onto the lanai as she was afraid of heights, which we would tease her about.
Violet lived with Parkinson’s Disease for at least thirty-five years. She also took care of Fred at their home until he passed away from terminal cancer. Violet then joined The Moose Jaw and District Seniors Center, also known as the Timothy Eaton Center, where she filled her lonely days. She enjoyed having lunch with her many friends, doing ceramics, playing nickel bingo, and purchasing many Nevada tickets. She sat at the same table there for many years. In younger days, Violet and Fred went to Saskatchewan Roughrider games and later watched the football games on television. She was a member of St. Andrew’s United Church, Timothy Eaton Center since 1991, Superannuates, and the NDP Party for many, many years.
The family would like to thank Dr. A Van Heerden for the excellent care she provided to Mom over the years. We are so grateful for the kind and compassionate care, especially in her final hours, from the staff at Crescent Park Retirement Villa and Dominic for his bingo games, which Mom enjoyed.
A Celebration of Violet’s Life will be held on Wednesday, January 22nd, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at Moose Jaw Funeral Home. Reverend Doug Shepherd will officiate and a private family interment will take place at Regina Memorial Gardens.
