It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father, Ung Long Duong on February 10, 2025.
He is survived by his wife, Phi, of nearly 50 years; daughter, Connie; son, Jackson (Sarah); daughter, Cathy (Andrew); granddaughter, Amelia; and extended family residing in the United States, Hong Kong, Vancouver, and Australia.
Long was a beloved and selfless man with a big heart and a bright smile – a son, brother, father, uncle, grandfather, friend, colleague, community volunteer, and humble philanthropist for all who knew him.
In the late 1970s Long with his wife and daughter moved from Vietnam to start a new life in Winnipeg and several years later gave birth to a son and another daughter. With strong work ethic, determination, and optimism, he worked tirelessly to build a better life for his family despite numerous challenges. A modest and self-sacrificing man, his optimism for a brighter future will always be remembered. He had a long gratifying career at Canadian Tire, dedicating over 30 years to ensuring customers had a great experience. He was well known for his signature phrase-« Sold! »-which he would proudly say after assisting a customer who had decided to make a purchase.
Beyond his career, Long enjoyed gardening and traveling. He was an avid Winnipeg Jets fan and was deeply involved in the local Chinese Teochew and Chinese Buddhist communities – dedicating countless hours to ensuring those communities thrived. He was always ready to assist anyone in need and played a key role in bringing people together. He was also a generous and charitable person, giving to numerous organizations in Canada and around the world, all while remaining humble about his contributions.
Through example Long instilled in his children the same values of kindness and goodness – emphasizing that giving is better than receiving, doing good cannot wait, and leaving the world a better place.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the numerous care providers at CancerCare Manitoba, Grace Hospital, Victoria General Hospital, Health Sciences Centre, St. Boniface Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital and Toronto General Hospital.
A funeral prayer service will be held to honour Long’s life at Bardal Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 18th, 2025, at 6pm with public viewing from 5 to 9pm.
If friends so desire, donations in memory of Long can be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation in lieu of flowers.
Long’s presence will be deeply missed. He will be remembered for his kindness, warmth, patience, dedication and unwavering love for his family, friends and community. His smile and spirit will live on in the hearts of those who have crossed paths with him.
We love you DAD. May you rest in peace.
