Tom Grandy left this world on February 7, 2025. He was 78 years old when he died in the ICU in Halifax. Though he left us too soon, he filled his years with more adventure, laughter, and love than most could fit into a lifetime.
Born in Grand Bank, Newfoundland, Tom left home at 17 to follow his own path and carve out a fantastical life. He relied on his natural talents, strong character, and a sharp sense of humour that made him unforgettable.
Tom’s journey eventually landed in Vancouver. Along the way, he worked in mailrooms, built dentures, drove a taxi, learned skills in a hardware store, worked in a chocolate shop, cooked at A&W, bounced at bars, decorated Keg and Cleaver restaurants, and sold real estate. No matter the job, he approached it with flair, diligence, and a humour that was unmatched. But his true passion was finding, refinishing, and selling exquisite pine furniture, which he sourced from his favourite haunts— Ontario, Florida, Palm Springs, and the South Shore of Nova Scotia. His impeccable taste and keen eye made him a master at his craft.
Tom’s greatest treasure, however, was not something he found in an antique shop—it was Don Longton, his beloved partner of nearly 49 years. They were partners in life, business, and travels, starting out buying and renovating houses in Toronto, Vancouver and Nova Scotia.
In 2016, they surprised everyone with their “pop-up » wedding in their backyard. It was a glorious day for all. In 1995, Tom and Don opened The Joy of Antiques in Petite Riviere. Tom ran the shop while Don refinished furniture and tended to their stunning gardens. Visiting their store was an experience in itself..guests were welcomed into a beautifully curated space that smelled of pine, sounded of Josh Groban, and often felt like a lively cocktail party with Tom as the charismatic host. Though he could be a little “crusty” at times, he was always honest, fair, and full of heart.
Tom loved many things: the colour yellow, bellowing old time hymns, dogs, his chickens, being gay, his friends, a good story, a strong cup of coffee with something sweet, the thrill of a great find, a good book, cycling to Crescent Beach, America’s Got Talent, his AA pals, and above all, Don.
Even in his final moments, Tom’s humour shone through. His last words were, “Don’t order the flowers yet.”
Tom is survived by his partner, Don Longton; his mother-in-law; Joan Modonese, his sister, Marion (Leo) Bonnell; his brother, Carl Grandy; nephews Steven Bonnell and Leonard Grandy; nieces Susan Wiseman and Beth Hayley; many great-nieces and nephews; and a wide circle of cousins in Newfoundland.
He was predeceased by his parents, Susie (Green) Grandy and Leonard Grandy and younger brother Clayton Grandy.
The family would like to thank Halifax Infirmary, particularly the staff in the ICU and on Unit 5.2 and Barbara Knowlton and Avy for spending day and night with Tom through his time there. Barbara’s love for Tom was beyond their friendship and it showed during his last days. Don is beyond grateful!
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy 3, Lunenburg. A private cremation has taken place.
A celebration of Tom’s fabulous life will be held in June with details to come.
Donations in Tom’s memory will be gratefully accepted at the Nova Scotia SPCA or Souls Harbour Rescue Mission, Halifax.
